Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

Question

Answer

1. I'm an Australian native marsupial and I'm nocturnal, so I'm mostly awake at night. I usually live in a burrow, but a hollow log or something similar will do me just fine. I look slow and harmless, but I have sharp claws and teeth and I'm all muscle. What am I?Wombat
2. I'm a large feline mammal. I'm not the fastest or the strongest but I am the biggest of the felines, save hybrids. My coat is very distinctive, so you'll know me if you see me. What am I?Tiger
3. I'm a mammal that can come in many different shapes and sizes, depending on my breed. I'm one of the most popular kinds of pets, to the point that I am often called 'Man's Best Friend'. What am I?Dog
4. I'm a hybrid mammal and the largest feline in the world, due to a hormone that means I never stop growing. I used to be thought of as infertile but that has since been proven wrong. What am I?Liger
5. I'm a meat-eating marsupial, about the size of a small dog. In the wild, I am only found in one place in the world. I have the strongest bite of any mammal compared to my size, but I don't often eat live prey. What am I?Tasmanian Devil
6. I'm the largest wild canine still alive today. In some places I am hunted for sport or to keep me away from livestock, but in others I'm protected. What am I?Wolf
7. I'm a large mammal, native to Africa and Asia. I resemble a dog in some ways, but I am not actually related to them. I'm well known for my distinctive call. What am I?Hyena
8. I'm the largest animal to have ever lived, my tongue alone weighing something around 2.7 tons. I can fit about 90 tons of water in my mouth. Despite that, I can't swallow anything much bigger than a beach ball. What am I?Blue Whale
9. I'm a small mammal that is able to fly. People used to think I was blind, but that is not true, even though I do use echolocation to help me see. Most species of me eat insects, but some feed on fruit and a few even feed off of other mammals! What am I?Bat
10. I'm an Asian mammal that looks like a raccoon, but I'm not related to them. In Japan, I'm known as a 'Tanuki', although they used to have many different names for me. I'm an omnivore with a particularly diverse diet, so I will eat anything from berries to fish to insects. What am I?Raccoon Dog
