QR Challenge: Canine diseases

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.


B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

1. The cause of the disease Kennel Cough is from different viruses and some bacterium. Some symptoms for the Kennel Cough include illness, sneezing, a runny nose, and eye discharge. Kennel Cough is like a cold for dogs, most of the time it is not harmful and will be just fine. Some treatments for Kennel Cough is to call the Veterinarian, take medications, and some antibiotics. Dogs with Kennel Cough will usually be cured in 3 weeks some older dogs take three to six weeks. Also keeping a dog in a well humidified area and using a harness instead of a collar it will minimize the coughing and help it cure. This is a Bacterial Infection.answer1
2. The Parvovirus is a very deadly virus for dogs to get. The dog will get very lethargy, it will vomit continuously, the dog gets a very bad fever, and bad diarrhea. Parvovirus is the top killer in dogs in terms of viruses. The cause of a dog getting this virus is coming in contact with fecal matter that has the parvovirus in the fecal matter. The virus can be intestinal or cardio. The parvovirus is treated by fast work by veterinarians. They treat it with IV fluids, colloids, anti nausea injections, and other drugs. If not treated right away the dog can die within forty eight hours.answer2
3. The cause of the disease Distemper is from the dog breathing in airborne viral particles, also by direct contact with urine, feces, or secretions. The symptoms of Distemper are Fevers, loss of appetite, depression, coughing, nasal discharge, vomiting, diarrhea, eye inflammation and pneumonia. There is no treatment for Distemper at this time, but the best choice as of right now is to bring your dog to the Vet and they will treat it as it comes. The prevention for Distemper is to get one of the vaccines, and also keep your dog away from germs and other infected things.answer3
