QR Challenge: Computer and Internet Terminology

Created using the ClassTools QR Treasure Hunt Generator

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

Question

Answer

1. 1. What is meant by the term "flaming"?Flaming is the act of posting or sending offensive messages over the Internet.
2. 2. What is a "BitTorrent"?It is a peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing protocol designed to reduce the bandwidth required to transfer files. It does this by distributing file transfers across multiple systems, thereby lessening the average bandwidth used by each computer.
3. 3. What does "Cloud computing refer to?Cloud computing refers to applications and services offered over the Internet. These services are offered from data centers all over the world, which collectively are referred to as the "cloud."
4. 4. What is "Artificial Intelligence"?Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is the ability of a computer to act like a human being. It has several applications, including software simulations and robotics. However, artificial intelligence is most commonly used in video games, where the computer is made to act as another player.
5. 5. Explain the term "encryption"Encryption is the coding or scrambling of information so that it can only be decoded and read by someone who has the correct decoding key.
6. 6. What does "Intellectual Property mean?Intellectual property refers to the ownership of intangible and non-physical goods. 7. 7. Explain what a "podcast" is.The name "podcast" combines the terms iPod and broadcast into a single catchy word. As the name suggests, podcasts are audio and video broadcasts that can be played on an iPod. However, because podcasts are downloaded using Apple iTunes and can be played directly within the program, you don't actually need an iPod to listen to a podcast.
8. 8. Who whould you classify as a "remote user" in the computer world? In the computer world, a remote user is someone who works on a computer from a remote location. When Bob accesses his office computer from home, he is considered a remote user.
9. 9. What would someone who "tweaks" computer parts be doing? When you modify a certain piece of hardware for better performance, it is often referred to as "tweaking" it. Overclocking the computer's CPU or changing jumper settings on the motherboard are common examples of hardware tweaking. Removing system limitations and adding plug-ins or extensions to a computer's operating system are types of software tweaking.
10. 10. Explain the term "virtual memory".Virtual memory increases the available memory your computer has by enlarging the "address space," or places in memory where data can be stored. It does this by using hard disk space for additional memory allocation.
