Created using the ClassTools QR Treasure Hunt Generator

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

Question

Answer

1. question1 Who is St. Valentine and why do we have a day commemorating him?answer 1 St. Valentine was a Roman clergyman executed on February 14th in 270 AD for secretly marrying couples in defiance of the emperor Claudius. Claudius was having trouble recruiting men for his armies because the married men did not want to leave their families for as long as Claudius’s campaigns would keep them away. So Claudius forbids all marriages, thinking that the young men would have no ties and would then join the army. Of course this did not work. St. Valentine was arrested for performing marriages. On the day that he died he sent a message to the daughter of the prison guard who visited him in jail thanking her for her friendship and loyalty and signed it “Love from your Valentine”. This is believed to have been the beginning of exchanging messages with your loved ones on February 14th.
2. question2 15% of women receive flowers from whom?answer2 15% of women actually send flowers to themselves on Valentine’s Day. I suppose it is because they have no one to send them flowers and they want everyone to think they do. But there may be other reasons! Such as, many men believe buying flowers is a waste of money.
3. question3 How many Valentine’s Day cards are sent each year?answer3 There are approximately one billion cards sent for Valentine’s Day each year – second only to Christmas.
4. question4 Who is Cupid’s mother and why is Cupid associated with Valentine’s Day?answer4 Cupid’s mother is Venus, the Roman goddess of love and beauty. Cupid’s name means desire or love and if you are hit by one of his magical arrows, you will fall in love with the first person that you see.
5. question5 Who introduced the first box of Valentine’s Day chocolates?answer5 The first box of chocolates in a heart-shaped box was introduced by Richard Cadbury in 1868.
