QR Challenge: Genetics Quiz

Created using the ClassTools QR Treasure Hunt Generator

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

C. TIPS / OTHER IDEAS

4. A detailed case study in how to set up a successful QR Scavenger Hunt using this tool can be found here.

Question

Answer

1. How is that every single person is genetically unique?Every single person has two parents. Each parent contributes half of the genetic information to their child. The half of the information that they pass on to their children is random.
2. Why are identical twins not unique? The genetic information is passed on when the egg is fertilized. That fertilized egg divides into two different but identical groups of cells. Each of these become one of the twins. Because the division takes place AFTER the egg is fertilized, identical twins are genetically identical too.
3. What is the difference between asexual and sexual reproduction?Sexual reproduction is when two parents reproduce (egg and sperm) to produce offspring that are genetically unique from both parents. Asexual reproduction is when one parent produces offspring that has the same genetic information as the parent.
4. Why are chromosomes important?Chromosomes contain genes, which contain DNA that makes every single person (except identical twins) genetically unique. Individuals have roughly 30,000 genes located on these chromosomes, which essentially make up an individual.
5. Why would scientists study fruit flies or pea plants when it comes to genetics?Fruit flies reproduce quickly. They also reproduce many, and you can easily distinguish between the characteristics of the offspring.
6. Is heart disease inherited? Is it caused by environmental factors or genetic?Heart disease could be considered both. There is evidence that heart disease is genetic, but there is also evidence that if you do not maintain a healthy lifestyle, heart disease is more prevalent.
7. What is a mutationA mutation is when there is a change in the copying of the genes from parent(s) to offspring.
8. Who is Gregor Mendel and why is he important?Gregor Mendel was the father of genetics, and used pea plants and fruit flies to study characteristics from generation to generation. He saw patterns within these generations, and discovered a 3:1 ratio of dominant to recessive traits.
