1. Each year, millions of Americans go camping to enjoy fresh air, wildlife, and the beauty of nature. Camping may mean sleeping outdoors or in tents and cooking food outdoors. Some campers carry backpacks in which they carry all of their supplies in packs on their backs. They can hike into areas where people cannot get with their cars or vans. Many families use bus-like trailers called campers. A camper can have an engine of its own, or it may be pulled by a car. These campers have beds and kitchens. They often can be hooked up to electricity. Some people call these campers "a hotel room on wheels." | Description | 2. Miriam took the watercolor paints and brushes down from the cabinet. She removed her painting smock from the hook and put it on to protect her clothing. After she filled a glass with water for rinsing her brushes, Miriam clipped a piece of art paper to her easel. Then she set a vase overflowing with wildflowers on the table in front of her. Miriam studied the flowers for several minutes. She stared at the vase until she memorized its shapes. She then dipped her brush in the paint and began a painting of the wildflowers and the vase. Miriam worked on her painting for several hours before she was finished. | Sequence | 3. Did you ever wonder why rain pours down from the sky? Sun rays heat the earth’s surface which consists of two-thirds water. The water evaporates as it is heated. Tiny water particles collect in the air to form clouds. As more and more water particles collect, they bump into each other and form droplets that become too heavy to be held by the air. This process of water particles turning into water droplets is called condensation. If the air temperature around the cloud is 32 degrees or colder, particles can turn into ice and form snowflakes. If the earth’s temperature is above 32 degrees, the sleet or snow melts into rain which pours down from the sky. | Cause and Effect | 4. My tenth birthday party was much more fun than my ninth birthday party. Last year, we stayed at my house and a clown came to entertain us. This year, we went to a bowling alley and took over six lanes. I had ten friends and a lot of relatives at the party this year, but last year just my relatives came over. The food this year was better too, because we had pizza and cake instead of just cupcakes. I wonder what my eleventh birthday will be like. | Compare and Contrast | 5. Many grandparents complain that their grandchildren do not pay attention to them. This makes the grandparents feel sad because it seems as if the grandchildren don’t care about them. If this is a problem in your life, there are several ways you can solve it. Make time to call your grandparents and talk with them at least once a week. Tell them the things that are happening in your life. If you have a dance recital or sports event, be sure to invite your grandparents and send it in the mail. You can include photos of your family and friends in your letter. Just a quick note sends the message, “ I care about you. You are important to me.” | Problem/solution |
