QR Challenge: Word Problem Fun

Created using the ClassTools QR Treasure Hunt Generator

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

Question

Answer

1. Dr. Russell had 22 first grade students and 18 kindergarten students going on a field trip. She could only fit 10 students per bus. She used this number sentence to figure out if she could 22/10=2.2. Is Dr. Russel guilty of using the wrong number sentence or innocent because she used the right number sentence. Explain you answer.Guilty. She should have added the number of students to find the total number of students getting on the bus. Then, she needed to divide those students into equal groups of 10.
2. Derrick had 50 CD's. He gave 15 to his friend Jaylen. He had to put the rest in to CD cases so that each case had the same amount. He knew each case could only hold 5 CD's. He used the number sentence 50 + 15 = 65, 65/5=15 to determine that he needed 15 cases. Is Derrick guilty or innocent. Explain your answer.Derrick is guilty because he should have subtracted 15 CD's from his total number of 50 instead of adding. Then, he could divide by 5. He would need 7 cases.
3. Shaunterrin planted a garden. She had 3 rows of strawberries. Each row had 4 strawberry seeds in it. When they were all ripe, she ate 5 of them. Shaunterrin needed to know how many strawberries she had left. She used this number sentence to determine the number of strawberries left: 3x4=12, 12-5=7. IS Shaunterrin guilty or innocent? Explain your answer. She is innocent. You have to multiply to find the total number of strawberries and subtract what she ate to find what was left.
4. Sha'Tamera in Dyamind combined their bow collections. Together they had 16 bows. They wanted to split their bows equally so that each of them would have the same amount. They used this number sentence to determine the number of bows they'd each get: 16x2=__. Are they guilty (used the wrong number sentence) or innocent (used the right number sentence). Explain your answer. They are innocent. They should have divided because they were splitting the total number of bows equally
5. David had 25 toy cars. He wanted to put them on his shelves so that each shelf had 5 toy cars. He used the number sentence 25/5=____ to determine how many shelves he needed. Is David guilty or innocent. Explain your answer.David is innocent. He had a total number of cars and needed to divide them in to groups of 5.
