QR Challenge: UN Day Highlights

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.


B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

1. What is UN DayIt stands for United Nations and it's where we celebrate the different nationalities we have in our community (school). Representatives are chosen to represent their countries by carrying the flag in the flag parade, they also wear their country's national clothes or their flag's colors.
2. What other activities take place during UN DayBesides the flag parade, parents bring their country's food, and everyone enjoys the feast. Last year, the middle, elementary and high school were divided into small groups, and they painted peace rocks. They also made peace doves to hang around the school.
3. Why is UN Day importantCelebrating peace, and everyone's nationalities is important for creating a safe, respectful community.
4. How are the representatives chosenFirst priority goes to seniors and 4th graders. Then when that is done, other representatives are chosen by grade (from oldest to youngest).
5. How long is UN DayThe celebration takes the whole school day, It starts early at 9 with the flag parade, and it has different presentations and activities during the day. There is also a feast, and usually a band concert at the end. Then people leave at around 2 P.M by school transport or by their own vehicles.
