QR Challenge: Prepare/Plan/Share: What is the Question?

Created using the ClassTools QR Treasure Hunt Generator

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

Question

Answer

1.
2.
3.
4. 1. Essential questions that were asked in this unit: Prepare: I asked the students the following: Imagine that you were babysitting and an earthquake hit! What would you need to know to stay safe? What other considerations would you have? Is it more important to stay safe yourself, or worry about those that you are babysitting? Please Explain your thinking!
5.
6. 2. Care: The caring questions came as a result of our research on earthquakes. We compared the Earthquake in Haiti to a similar quake in California (Northridge) Why was there so much more death and destruction in Haiti? I asked them if they knew how their own home was built? What was inside of its walls? Who might know? How do we know if a dwelling will be safe in and earthquake or other disaster? Does the government have any obligation to help prevent damage? If so, what can they do? This led to our Engineering Project and Investigation. Nobody is immune.
7.
8. 3. Share: Honestly the sharing portion of this unit was a HUGE surprise for me. It was not planned at the onset of the unit. It was the 6th graders who came up with the idea to help Duprene when they learned about him. They developed leadership skills as well as engineering knowledge as they developed a plan to help Duprene. Their plan was not without problems. At first, they wanted to buy bracelets from Haiti. This seemed like a good idea, but shipping and supply would not keep up with demand. They had to work to find another way! It was amazing to experience the learning and caring that happened as the Murdy Community came together for a common cause. Safety and life are important
