QR Challenge: Peer Education

Created using the ClassTools QR Treasure Hunt Generator

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

Question

Answer

1. What is a peer educator? A Peer Educator is a young person (aged 14 – 17) who delivers first aid training to other young people in St John Ambulance (SJA) and their wider community.
2. What is the Peer Education programme? The Peer Education (PE) programme is split in to four sections, Induction, Training Skills, BTEC Level 2 Award in Peer Education and delivery. The Induction is shared with the Service Delivery Apprentice (SDA) programme (see Joshua Muir for further details about SDA). The Induction trains you in first aid, infection and prevention control, manual handling and safeguarding. This will allow you to follow either the SDA or PE route. Following on from this, you will be trained in training skills, which will form the basis of your training knowledge. You will then complete the BTEC which is four units long. Finally you need to deliver 10 hours training, of which 30 minutes is assessed. This totals 72 hours learning time.
3. How will I receive the training?Training will be delivered using different models. We will be trialling a week long model, a three weekend model and a unit/evening model at various locations across the North West. Opportunities for each different model will be open to all. The training will be delivered by the programme lead with support from current peer educators.
4. How many hours a year training am I expected to deliver? As a peer educator you will be expected to directly deliver 24 hours of training each year for SJA. This could be delivered at your unit, on a course day or weekend for SJA or within the community delivering SJA courses.
5. I don’t want to complete the BTEC – can I still become a peer educator? You can become an assistant peer educator. This role enables you to assist peer educators in the delivery of a session including demonstrations and helping with group work.
6. What opportunities does being a peer educator give me?Being a peer educator will help build your confidence and adds addition skills to your CV, such as team work, communication and time management. It can be used as a step towards adult trainer status and can also give you an insight in to teaching should this be a career you wish to follow.
7. How will I be supported?Support will be provided by the programme lead, current peer educators and your unit manager. If you have any issues, please contact the programme lead directly who will assist you as best they can.
8. Who leads the programme in the North West?David Copeland – david.copeland@gman.sja.org.uk – 07977 184 107
