Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

• Download a QR reader (e.g. I-Nigma | NeoReader | Kaywa) onto their mobile devices
• Bring these devices into the lesson.

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

2. Kara needed new socks. She found cute socks at Target in 2 different size packs. One pack had 5 pairs of socks for $4.85. Another pack had 7 pairs of socks for $6.99. Which pack is a better buy? Why?	The pack of 5 because each costs 97 cents instead of 99 cents.
3. Morgan needed more shampoo. Her favorite shampoo came in 2 different sizes at Wal-mart. She could buy a 12 oz bottle for $3.79 or a 18 ounce bottle for $4.99. Which is a better buy? Why?	The 18oz bottle costs 27 cents per ounce
4. Caroline needs to buy sugar to make some cookies. At Burkholders she can buy a 2lb bag for $2.99 or a 5lb bag for $4.89. Which is a better buy? Why?	The 5lb bag is at 97 cents/lb
5. Nick's family needs coffee. He can buy a 32 ounce can of Dark Roast Coffee at Wal-mart for $7.97 or a 36 ounce can of French Roast at Wegmans for $8.40. Which is a better buy? Why?	Wegman's coffee costs 23 cents an ounce, Walmart's 24.9 cents and ounce.
6. Gus needs some rope for a rope bridge he's building over Elk Creek. At Wal-mart he can buy a 10 foot roll of rope for $4.49. At Lowe's he can buy a 25 foot roll for $8.97. Gus needs 40 feet of rope. Where would he save more money buying his rope? Why?	Saves 2 cents at Lowes.
7. Serenity wants to make some rubber band bracelets. She can buy a pack of 175 at Wal-mart for $3.99. She can buy a pack of 250 rubber bands at Weaver's for $5.25. Where would she get more rubber bands for her money? Why?	Weaver's because she'd pay$0.021 cents per band compared to $0.0228 cents per band at Wal-mart.
8. Nathan needs to buy feed for his cows. He goes to Centre Hall Farm store where they have 2 different types of excellent feed in different sized bags to choose from. Cattle Pride comes in a 120lb bag for $35.99. Cows Best comes in a 200lb bag for $59.99. Which feed would save him money? Why?	Neither, both cost the same- .299 cents a lb
9. Hailey needs to buy some tackle for her horses. She has 5 horses who need new bridles. At Tractor Supply she can purchase a pack of 5 bridles for $159.99. Fisher's Shoe and Saddle shop is having a special on bridles this week and their pack of 2 cost $61.08 and come with a free third bridle. Where should Hailey buy her bridles? Why?	Fisher's
10. Mariah is having a cookout this Friday night. She needs to buy 30 hot dog buns. She goes to Burkholders and finds that 6 packs of buns are on sale for $1.99. She goes to Sams Club and finds that they sell packs of 16 hot dog buns for $5.97. Where should she buy hot dog buns? Why?	Burkholders.
11. Challenge ? for Bonus points and bucks: Denisha wanted to buy some apples at Way Fruit Farm. Apples by the peck cost $4.75 and weigh about 2.5lbs. Apples by the bag from the bin cost $1.99 a pound and weigh about the same. Where should Denisha buy her apples- from the bin or by the peck?Why?	By the peck they cost 1.90lb, by the bag bin they cost 22 cents more.
