Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.


B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

1. QuestionThis is the Learning Centre! Did you know that last year alone it had over 10,000 drop-in visits from students! It has three quiet rooms for studying, 20 computers and a printer for student use, teachers and aides for tutoring in every class(including before school, at lunch, and after school, or just a place to do homework, missed tests and assignments! If you've got work to do, the door is always open!
2. Question2This is the Culinary Arts program! Did you know that our students learn all of the ins and outs of a professional kitchen, and that they make and serve between 150-200 meals per day? The amazing menu ranges from Vietnamese pork burgers, Korean beef short ribs and sushi, to lasagna, salads, paninis, and salmon ratatouille with polenta!

Question3This is the Choral Program...Did you know that the program has performed in Victoria, Disneyland, Vancouver and many other places, and this year they are heading to perform in the Big Apple, New York City! In 2011 both the junior and senior choirs won golds in Anaheim while competing against some of the best choir groups on the continent! Show choirs here at Grandin are not auditioned so come one, come all!!!
4. Question4This is the band room! Did you know that our Bishop Grandin Marching Ghosts is the only High School marching show band in Calgary. Beginning with humble origins, the program has grown significantly since it was founded in 1986. The marching ghosts now support a band size of over 100 musicians. The Marching Ghosts perform all over the world and are internationally recognized. Some of the places they have performed include, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, USA, and all over Canada! They just recently played at the halftime show at the Stampeder's playoff game!
5. Question5This is the Drama Room! Did you know that the Bishop Grandin Drama program hosts two major performances every year that each draw a large audience. The program provides an excellent opportunity for students to develop performances skills that they will use for the rest of their lives. Students interested in the Drama program should enroll in Drama 10, 20, or 30 and audition for the semi-annual plays!
6. Question6Did you know that Bishop Grandin High School is one of the largest in Calgary, serving around1600 students in the communities of south Calgary. The program offerings include all of the academic disciplines, an Advanced Placement (A.P.) program, extensive art, drama, choir and music programs including an elite marching band, an Extended French program, a Knowledge and Employability Program, a Registered Apprentice program, International Languages, an Active Life Skills physical education program, and an extensive Career and Technology Studies program. Bishop Grandin is also noted for competitive sports teams.
7. Question7Did you know that Bishop Grandin has a very successful athletics program? Since the school's inception the Ghosts have won 86 city championships in sports such as soccer, track, badminton, rugby and cross country! Basketball alone has 21 championships, wrestling (16), volleyball (15), and football(11), lead the way!!!
8. Question8Did you know that our cosmetology program serves students as well as members of our community? Haircuts and colours, highlights, facials, manicures, pedicures and yes, even beard trims are offered from this full service program!
