QR Challenge: Cooperative Fitness Field Day

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.


B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

1. Find the #1 flag on the playground. You must sing the ABC loudly as a team. When you are done tell Mrs. Presley what the 14 letter of the alphabet is. Now go read QR code #2.
2. Go the the basketball court on the north side of the playground. Your team must stand on top of the tarp together. You must turn the tarp over without having any member of the team touching the ground. When you complete the turn spell the word "Tarp" to Mrs. Goering.Now go ready QR code #5.
3. At the far northeast corner of the playground find station #5. Your team must crawl between each other legs building a tunnel from orange to yellow cone. Team members must be touching shoulders of the person in front of them. When you are done tell Miss Ramsey what 7 + 9 is. Go find the #3 QR code.
4. Count all the silver poles on the two soccer goals used for soccer on the playground. At the sign #3 tell Mrs. Clapham to get your next clue.Go read QR code #6.
5. In the center of the playground find sign #6. Taking turns each team member throws a ball into the can. When your team as made 3, a 4th grader must tell Mrs. Damm what 3x9 is. Go read clue #4.
6. Find the tetherball circles on the playground. All team members must pass a marble with a white tube from one side of the tetherball circle to the other. The marble must land in the can when you get it to the other side or you must start over. Give your can with the marble to Mrs. Linderer for your next clue.Go read QR code #11.
7. Go to the backstop on the southeast corner of the playground. One team member at a time will run to the bucket, take out a ball and throw at the target on the backstop. You must count by five for each time you hit the target until you get to 50. When you get to 50 you will get your next clue from Mrs. Ryan. Go read clue #7.
8. Find the blue mats by station sign #7. Taking turns your team must cup stack the 3-6-3 one time. You must stack the cups on top of the blue mats. When all team members have done it once, a 3rd grader must tell Mrs. Oliver what 3+6+3 is to get your next clue.Go read QR code 13.
9. Go to the basketball court on the south side of the playground. Starting with your oldest team member, take turns shooting baskets from any cone. When you have made 5 baskets counting out loud, a 1st grader must tell Mrs. Holguin how many points a free throw is in basketball. Go read QR code #8.
10. Find the slipper slide on the playground. One person at a time on the slide each team member must go down the slide. All teams members must do this two times. When you are all done, count the number of steps on the ladder of the slide and tell Mrs. Johnson to get your next clue.Go read QR code #14.
11. Find station sign #14. All team members must stand on a spot facing the sign in ABC order. Each team member must say their last name and then sit down on the spot. If you are in the correct order you will get your next clue. Go read QR code #12.
12. Find the station sign #12 on the north side of the school. Your team will go inside the school. When you enter the building by the nurses office, Miss Halderman will give you the next step to follow. Scan the code on above the water fountain for your next step.
13. This is your rest break. After using the restrooms, each team member must get a cup of water and sit along the wall by the water fountain. When you are all seated Mrs. Connelly will start your time of 1 minute resting. You will get your next clue when your minute is done.Read QR code #15.
14. Find the soccer field on the playground. Pick a cone and ball for your team to use. Starting with the shortest player, take turns kicking a soccer ball into the goal. When you have made 5 goals, tell Mrs. Prescott how many points a goal is worth in soccer.Go read QR code #9.
15. Go to the front doors of the school. Facing south, go left around the corner of the building counting all the doors around the school to the recess doors. Tell Mrs. Reece how many doors to get your next clue. Go read QR code #10.
16. Your team must run one time around the base path of the kickball field. One person has to run at a time. When you are all done tell Mrs. Hall how points a homerun is worth in softball. When you have your 15 clues, try to solve the puzzel and then go tell Mrs. Lucas.
17. You need a team poster. One 3rd grader and one 1st grader needs to find the stage in the gym. Get a poster page and bring it back to your team. They can pick which color of construction paper they would like to use.
18. You need something to write with. One 4th grader and one 2nd grader needs to find Mrs. Hall by the nurse's office. She will give you what you need. They need a bag of markers and colors. Remind them to return them to you when they are finished.
19. On your team poster you need your team number in the center of the poster. Everyone needs to write their first and last name on the poster. Have them scan the QR code #3.
20. Your entire team needs a drink break. Follow a 3rd grader to the white water fountain. Take turns getting a drink. When you are done return to your classroom. Have the team read QR code #5.
21. For the last task, you must follow a 4th grader to the restrooms. Each team member must try to use the bathroom if needed. After you have ALL used the restroom find Mrs. Reece by the office for your next step. They need to show your their team poster and then a 2nd grader needs to return it to their team leader in their classroom. When the second grader returns they can go out the front door to play on the playground.
