QR Challenge: Equations & Inequalities

Created using the ClassTools QR Treasure Hunt Generator

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

C. TIPS / OTHER IDEAS

4. A detailed case study in how to set up a successful QR Scavenger Hunt using this tool can be found here.

Question

Answer

1. 1. Give an example of: the distributive property, the associative property, and the inverse property of addition. 2(3 + 4) = 6 + 8, 6 + (2 + 3) = (6 + 2) + 3, 9 + (-9) = 0
2. 2. Simplify and write in standard form: (-4a – 7b) – (9a – 15b) -13a + 8b
3. 3. Simplify and write in standard form: 2x – 3(6 + 2x) -4x - 18
4. 4. Solve, graph, & check the inequality: -3x < -18 x >6
5. 5. Solve and check 3x + 8 = 53 x = 15
6. 6. Solve and check 5(x+ 9) = -40 x = -17
7. 7. Solve and check (-4/5)x=(28/40) x = (-7/8)
8. 8. Solve and check 12y + 9 - y = 42 y = 3
9. 9. Solve, graph, and check 3(a – 10) ≤ -12 a ≤ 6
10. 10. You bought a magazine for $5 and four erasers. You spent a total of $25. How much did each eraser cost? Write an equation that represents this situation, then solve the equation to determine the cost of one eraser. Only algebraic solutions!!! 4x + 5 = 25, x = 5
11. 11. Write a simplified linear expression in standard form to represent the perimeter of the rectangle whose length is 4x + 3 and whose width is 2x + 2. Then, use your expression to find the value of x if the perimeter is 34 millimeters. (4x + 3) + (4x + 3) + (2x + 2) + (2x + 2) = 34, x = 2
