QR Challenge: Using Plant Hormones

Created using the ClassTools QR Treasure Hunt Generator

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

Question

Answer

1. When taking cuttings to clone a plant that has desirable characteristics, the cut end of the cutting is dipped into auxin powder before being placed in soil. The auxin powder stimulates the division of the cells there and their differentiation into root cells 1
2. taking cuttings is a very cheap and easy method that will enable growers to make clones of plants with desirable characteristics2
3. many crop plants or cereals have narrow leaves, while the weeds that can outcompete them tend to be broad leaved plants. When auxin is sprayed over fields, more of it is absorbed by the broad leaved weeds as they have a larger surface area. Once absorbed, the auxin makes the plants grow faster then they are supposed to and they die as a result. When used like this auxin makes the perfect weedkiller3
4. giberellins can be used in the brewing industry to end seed dormancy. It is also used to promote flowering throughout the year, especially chrysanthemums at Christmas. They also increase the size of fruit in seedless fruit varieties4
5. supermarkets often pick their fruit and then chill it to prevent it ripening. Also when transporting fruit, if the fruit is cold it is less likely to suffer bruising and therefore will look better on supermarket shelves. When ready to sell the fruit, they are warmed up and exposed to the hormone ethane which triggers ripening5
6. bananas release lots of ethane and as a result, will cause any nearby fruit to ripen faster than desired6
