China One Child Policy
When:
- One child policy started in 1979 but the problem actually started in 1975 when the population was at 1.8 billion.
- The policy was created by the Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping to temporarily limt communist China's population growth.
What:
- The limitation of the OCP is that it restricts couples to only having one child and to make sure the population of China does not increase.
There are exceptions for twins, rural couples, ethnic minority and parents with no siblings.
- 35% of China's population is subject to this policy.
- In 2008 a survey showed that 76% of the population supported the policy.
China One Child Policy
Where: One Child Policy covers about 35% of China- Mostly Urban areas.
China One Child Policy
Why:
The OCP was introduced because of China's over population - There was the worry that there was not going to be enough resources for the whole popualtion. In 1975 the population was at 1.0 billion people, the governement was scared the population would reach 1.8 billion. It finally started to level out, and so that the popualtion would reach 1.2 billion the policy was introduced.
How:
The Policy has increased forced abortions and female infanticide, killing baby girls due to the desire and preferrence of male babies. If couples have 2 children they are offered sterilization - The 2nd child would not get a free education and health care, lost benefits and pay a fine and an annual tax to support cost for their children.
-Free birth control education and contraception
- Free education and health care for children
- 10 % wage bonus priority housing
- Benefits - was put in palace in order for couples to follow the OCP.
China One Child Policy
Advantages of OCP:
- Prevention of 400 million births.
- Helps econmically - the governement will have to pay for less thing to pay for such as health and care for families.
- Population is more stable - fertility rate of China is now at 1.54.
- Less pollution - One child per family means there are less people therefor less people using resources;
- A decrease in overcrowdedness
- Less suffer from poverty - if a family only have one child they only have to fit that childs needs and not any other.
China One Child Policy
Disadvantages of OCP:
Killing of baby girls because people prefer boys rather then girls.
There are illegal and forced abortions of people with baby gilrs or people who already have one child.
The OCP effects an only child in various ways, the child could be spoilt and could expect to get everything he wants. The child could be brought up without having the experience of having a sibling to grow up with.
The OCP could lead to an aging population because of less children being born meaning that there will not be anyone to take over jobs when the older popualtion come to retire.
The OCP leaves many men without wives.
The amount of males being born compared to women is: 120 males to 100 females.
