Acids
Acid-a substance that when dissolved in water increases concentration of the Hydrogen ion, or H+
-Sour taste, watery, produces H3O+1 in water
-pH value:0-7
-Litmus paper indicates acids when it turns red
Rules:
-Acids start with with the cation, H
-Binary:Hydro__ic acid
Ex: HCL=Hydrocloric acid
HBr=Hydrobromic acid
Including a polyatomic ion: -ATE=-IC,-ITE=-OUS
Ex: HNO2=Nitrous acid
H2SO4=sulfuric acid
Bases
Base-a substance that when added to water increases the concentration of the Hyrdoxide ion, or OH-
-Bitter taste, feels slippery, produces OH-1 in water
-pH value: 7-14
-Litmus paper indicates bases when it turns blue
Rules:
-Cation+OH
Ex:Na+1 OH-1=NaOH
Ca+2 OH-1=Ca(OH)2
NaOH=Sodium Hyrdoxide
NH4OH=Ammonium Hyrdoxide
Both
-free ions when mixed with water
-conduct electricity
-Indicated by using litmus paper
