Introduction to Pink and Say

In fourth grade, we read the text, Pink and Say, by Patricia Polacco. This story is based on two boys who are fighting in the Civil War. One is eager to go to war and fight for his rights, the other is running away from war, beacuse he is scared. The boys become very close with one another, and learn some of the things the other has goen through because of his skin color.

Most students have no idea what the Civil War is at this point in their education, so a lot of front loading is reuqired in order for them to understand the story. This is a lesson that uses technology to frontload some of that needed information.
