QR Challenge: Arithmetic & Geometric Sequence Practice

Created using the ClassTools QR Treasure Hunt Generator

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

Question

Answer

1. Is the following sequence arithmetic or geometric? -10, -7, -4, -1,... If you think it's arithmetic go to desk 7. If you think it's geometric, go to desk 3. Arithmetic (Desk 7)
2. Find the next 3 terms in the following sequence: 0, 1.5, 3, 4.5,... When you are finished report to the desk number that is the same as the last term of your sequence. 6, 7.5, 9 (Desk 9)
3. Find the 14th term in an arithmetic sequence when the first term is 4.5 and the common difference is 1.5. Subtract 14 from your answer and this is the desk number you should report to for the next question. 24 (Desk 10)
4. What is the 12th term of the geometric sequence -4, -8, -16, ...? Find the answer and divide it by -1024 and this is the desk you should report to next. -8192 (Desk 8)
5. What is the common ratio of the following sequence 2, -12, 72, -432, ...? Take the absolute value of your answer and this is the desk that you should report to next. 6 (Desk 6)
6. What is the 6th term of the geometric sequence 50, 10, 2, ...? Leave your answer in decimal form. The number in the hundredths place is the next desk you should report to. 0.016 (Desk 1)
7. Is the following sequence geometric, arithmetic, or neither: 5, 8, 12, 17, ...? Go to desk 14 for geometric, 11 for arithmetic, or 13 for neither. Neither (Desk 13)
8. A movie rental club charges $4.95 for the first month's rentals. The club charges $18.95 for each additional month. How much is the total cost for one year? If it is more than $200 report to desk 14. If not, go to desk 11. $213.40 (Desk 14)
9. The first term of a geometric sequence is -0.25 and the common ratio is -3. Is the 57th term positive or negative? If you think it is positive go to desk 14, if you think it is negative go to desk 4. Negative (Desk 4)
10. What is the 92nd term if the 1st term is 1 and the common difference is 0.8? Multiply your answer by 5. The digits of your new answer create a sequence of their own. What is the next number if you continue that sequence? Proceed to that desk now. 12 (Desk 12)
11. A shoe store is discounting shoes each month. A pair of shoes cost $80. After the first month, they are on sale for $72. After the second month, they are on sale for $64.80. Find the cost of the shoes after the 11th month. After you find the answer, go to the desk that is in the ten's digit. $25.10 (Desk 2)
12. -10, 40, -160, 640, ... Find the common ratio of this sequence. Square the common ratio and subtract 5. This is the next desk you should report to. -4 (Desk 11)
13. What is the missing term in the following sequence: 1/15, 1, ________, 225? Proceed to that desk for your next question. 15 (Desk 15)
14. A carnival game awards a prize if Kasey can shoot a basket. The charge is $5.00 for the first shot, and then $2.00 for each additional shot. Kasey needed 11 shots to win a prize. What is the total amount Kasey spent to win a prize? Divide the answer by 5 and proceed to that desk. 5 (Desk 5)
15. What is the first term of a geometric sequence if the 4th term is -81 and the common ratio is -3? 3 (Desk 3)
