QR Challenge: Year 8 Riddles

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.


B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

The police instantly arrested the murderer. Who did it and how did they know?The Maid as the post offce isn't open on Sundays.
2. A window cleaner is cleaning a window on the 25th floor of a skyscraper when, suddenly, he slips and falls. He has no safety equipment and yet he is uninjured. How can this be?He is cleaning the window from the inside.
3. Two girls ate dinner together. They both ordered iced tea. One girl drank them very fast and had finished five in the time it took the other to drink just one. The girl who drank one died while the other survived. All the drinks were poisoned. How did the girl who drank the most survive?The poison was in the ice.
4. A woman shoots her husband, the holds him under water for five minutes. A little while later they both head out and enjoy dinner together. How can this be?The woman shoots him with a camera and then develops the photo.
5. A dead body is found at the bottom of a multistorey building. Seeing the position of the body it is evident that the person committed suicide. A detective is called to look after the case. He goes to the first florr and looks around. He opens the window and flips a coin in the direction of the body. Then he goes to the second floor and repeats. He keeps doing this until he reaches the top floor. He comes back down and states it wasn't a suicide but a murder. How did he know this?None of the windows were left open. If the person jumped who shut the windows?
6. A man murders his wife with a knife in their car. Noone sees. He throws her out of the car being careful not to leave fingerprints. Next he throws the knife off a cliff where it will never be found and he heads home. An hour later the police call him and tell him that his wife has been murdered and he needs to come to the scene of the crime immediately. When he arrives he is arrested. How did they know?He never asked the cop where the crime scene was but he turned up to the scene.
7. A murderer is condemned to death. He has to choose between three rooms. The first is full of raging fires, the second is full of assassins with loaded guns and the third is full of lions who haven't eaten in years. Which is the safest?The third with the lions as they would all be dead if they hadn't eaten in years.
8. A man was found dead with a cassette recorder in one hand and a gun in the other. When the police came in they pressed play on the cassette. He said 'I have nothing else to live for. I can't go on' then the sound of a gunshot. After listening to the tape, the police knew that it was not suidide but a murder. How did they know?If the man shot himself while recording how did he rewind the cassette?
9. A couple went on for a climbing trip. But only the husband returned from the vacation and said that his wife slipped off while climbing and died. On investigating, the local sheriff arrested him saying, 'Your travel agent called. You murdered your wife.'The man did not inform anyone about the trip. Then how did the agent was so sure that it is a murder?The man bought only one way ticket for his wife whereas he bought two way ticket for himself. It means that he was sure that he will be returning alone.
10. A man is found dead. When the investigation is done, he is found dead with a knife in his back. A chair sits beside him and the forensic team finds moisture around the body. If he committed suicide, how did he do it?The man used an ice knife. The ice was capable of holding the knife pointing upwards and he dropped down on the chair with his back towards the knife. The moisture indicates the melting of ice.
11. A woman has incontrovertible proof in court that her husband was murdered by her sister. The judge declares, “This is the strangest case I’ve ever seen. Though it’s a cut-and-dried case, this woman cannot be punished.” How can this possibly be?The sisters are siamese twins
12. A man was shot to death while in his car. There were no powder marks on his clothing, which indicated that the gunman was outside the car. However, all the windows were up and the doors locked. After a close inspection was made, the only bullet-holes discovered were on the man’s body. How was he murdered?The victim was in a convertible. He was shot when the top was down.
13. A man walked in the house. He was about to hang up his coat when he heard his wife say, "No John! Don't do it!" There was a shot and the woman was dead. There was a police officer, a doctor, and a lawyer standing next to her. The woman's husband knew that the police officer did it. But how did the husband know?The police officer was a man while the doctor and lawyer were ladies. John is a man’s name. The husband’s name was David. So John was the police officer’s name. David’s wife was saying, "No John! Don’t do it!" to the police officer and the police officer shot her anyway.
14. There is a man found dead in a circular mansion. The detective interviews the cook, maid, and babysitter. The cook said he couldn't have done it because he was preparing the meal. The maid said she couldn't have done it because she was dusting the corners. The babysitter said she couldn't because she was playing with the children. Who was lying?The maid. There are no corners in a circular mansion.
