QR Challenge: Biology Team

Created using the ClassTools QR Treasure Hunt Generator

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

C. TIPS / OTHER IDEAS

4. A detailed case study in how to set up a successful QR Scavenger Hunt using this tool can be found here.

Question

Answer

1. Welcome to our Biology Treasure Hunt. There are 10 QR codes scattered around the Biology rooms and hallways. Your job is to find them and answer the questions, then be the first person back to Uchenna's room. This is the first QR Code. Write your name and your favorite drink at the top of your paper. Have fun and the winner gets a prize. I am not telling you where your next QR code is; you have to find it. You can start at any number and it will give you a clue to your next QR code.Bio team
2. I attach to a host cell and inject my nucleic acid into the host. My nucleic acid is replicated, the host bursts and releases me to spread to other cells. The next QR code can be found near a college mascot in someone's room. lytic cycle
3. I infect a host cell and my DNA is replicated along with the Host DNA. I become dormant for a while and then I spontaneously enter the lytic cycle and cause the cell to burst. The next QR code can be found in a place were Mr. Holcomb finds pencils to use for his classes.lysogenic cycle
4. My head has nucleic acids and I am surrounded by a protein coat.virus
5. I have a protein coat instead of a cell membrane and I cause illnesses like influenza. The next QR code can be found in Brister's room; near the front. virus
6. I am non-living, have no metabolism, and must have a host to replicate. I cause diseases and cannot be killed by antibiotics. The next QR code can be found in the back of Norwood's room. virus
7. I am a molecule made from an amino acid chain that performs a specific task. The next QR code can be found near a place where you print. protein
8. I am a carbon-hydrogen-oxygen-nitrogen molecule created from a specific codon sequence. The next QR code can be found in a place where you might find Bio equipment.amino acid
9. I am formed from a sequence of three nucleotides and I specify one of twenty different amino acids. The next QR code can be found where a new teacher to our team resides.codon
10. I am a process that copies DNA's genetic information into messenger RNA. This is the last QR code. The first QR code can be found in the Bio stockroom near the TOY's room.transcription
