QR Challenge: Nature-Nurture Debate

Created using the ClassTools QR Treasure Hunt Generator

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

C. TIPS / OTHER IDEAS

4. A detailed case study in how to set up a successful QR Scavenger Hunt using this tool can be found here.

Question

Answer

1. What did Descartes argue?Human characteristics and even some aspects of knowledge are innate: the result of heredity.
2. What did Locke argue?Mind is a blank slate at birth upon which learning and experience writes: the result of the environment.
3. What is used to assess heredity? The heritability coefficient.
4. What does the 0.5 figure for heritability in IQ suggest? Both genetics and the environment are important factors in intelligence.
5. What did Lerner identify?Different levels of the environment.
6. Give an example of pre-natal term. The mother's physical and psychological state during pregnancy, or more generally through post-natal experiences such as the social conditions the child grows up in and the cultural and historical context they are part of.
7. Why is the nature-nurture question impossible to answer? As Lerner suggested, the environmental influence in a child begins as soon as it is born.
8. Why does it make little sense to try to separate nature from nurture? The two are so closely intertwined.
9. What might be the two causes of high concordance rates in twin studies?Shared genetics and shared upbringing.
10. Does nature create nurture? Refer to attachment. The child's innate temperament will influence the way its parents respond to it and their responses will in turn affect the child's behaviour. Thus heredity and environment interact.
11. What does the diathesis-stress model suggest about psychopathology?Psychopathology is is caused by biological/genetic vulnerability which is only expressed when coupled with a biological environmental 'trigger'.
