Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

C. TIPS / OTHER IDEAS

4. A detailed case study in how to set up a successful QR Scavenger Hunt using this tool can be found here.

Question

Answer

1. CHALLENGE QUESTION:The oxidation of Fe2+ ions by permanganate in acidic solution is accompanied by the formation of Fe3+ ions and Mn2+ ions. How many moles of FeSO4 would be oxidized by 100.0 ml of 0.02118 mol/L KMnO4 solution. Fe2+ + MnO4-> Fe3+ + Mn2+ (Reaction not balanced).01059 moles Fe^2+
2.
3. 1.Balance the following in acidic solution Mn 2+ + BiO3 - ===> MnO4 - + Bi 3+14 H + + 2 Mn 2+ + 5 BiO3 - ===> 2 MnO4 - + 5 Bi 3+ + 7 H2O
4.
5. 2. Balance the following in basic solution: Zn + NO3 - ===> Zn(OH)4 2- + NH36 H2O + NO3 - + 7 OH - + 4 Zn ===> NH3 + 4 Zn(OH)4 2-
6.
7. 3. Balance the following in acidic solution: NO2 ===> NO3 - + NOH2O + 3 NO2 ===> 2 NO3 - + NO + 2 H +
8.
9. 4. Balance the following in basic solution: 2 Al + 2 H2O + 2 OH - ===> 2 AlO2 - + 3 H22 OH - + Zn + 2 H2O ===> Zn(OH)4 2- + H2
10.
11. 5. Balance the following in basic solution: MnO4 - + C2O4 2- ===> MnO2 + CO24 H2O + 2 MnO4 - + 3 C2O4 2- ===> 2 MnO2 + 8 OH - + 6 CO2
