Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

• Download a QR reader (e.g. I-Nigma | NeoReader | Kaywa) onto their mobile devices
• Bring these devices into the lesson.

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

1. Cut out letters from old newspapers and magazines to spell each of your spelling words. Glue the words onto your paper.
2. Write each spelling word in lowercase letters. Write it again in capital letters.
3. Use Scrabble tiles to spell words and add up total points for each word.
4. Write each spelling word. Think of another word that looks very similar to the spelling word and write it. Write your spelling word one more time.
5. Write a thank you letter to someone for a gift you received. Use all of your words and circle the words.
6. Type your word list on the computer using an interesting font. Print it out.
7. Write your words in column one, copy them in column two, fold and write from memory to column three. Unfold to check your work.
8. Write your words three times each using a different color each time.
9. Write sentences using your spelling words, but replace your spelling words with a blank space. Give them to a friend to fill in the correct spelling word.
10. Create a crossword puzzle using your words' definitions as clues.
11. Write your words in sentences using alliteration.
12. Write each word forward, backward, and then forward again.
13. Use half of your spelling words and write sentences that have opinions. Use the other half of your spelling words and write sentences that are facts.
14. Using the computer, create a game using your spelling words in the smartboard format.
15. Make a word chain using your words.
16. Find your spelling words in a dictionary and write the two guide words you find at the top of each page.
17. Spell your words on an Etch-a-Sketch. Take a picture of your words.
18. Make a set of flashcards with your words. Practice spelling each word quietly to yourself.
19. Spell your words using the magnetic letters in the classroom. Take a picture of your work.
20. Write each spelling word two times normally and then one time in all capital letters.
21. Using a dry erase board, write your spelling words in a funny or odd way. Take a picture of your work.
22. Write a question for each spelling word. Circle the spelling word.
23. Speed spell your words three times each-- really, really FAST!
24. Use the rubber alphabet stamps and stamp/spell your spelling words.
25. Make a list of other words that fit the spelling pattern for the week. How many words can you find?
26. Write a short story using as many words as you can. Underline the words you used.
27. Write each of your spelling words. Using a thesaurus., find a synonym and antonym for each.
28. Look up your words in a dictionary and write the definition.
29. "Shape spell" each of your words. Then, go back and fill in the shapes.
30. Write a paragraph using as many of your words as you can. It must make sense and have a topic sentence.
31. Create a word search using your spelling list.
32. Write your words in alphabetical order.
33. Write your words three times each in cursive.
34. Write sentences for your spelling words. Circle the subject and underline the predicate.
