QR Challenge: Dracula 15-20

Created using the ClassTools QR Treasure Hunt Generator

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

C. TIPS / OTHER IDEAS

4. A detailed case study in how to set up a successful QR Scavenger Hunt using this tool can be found here.

Question

Answer

1. “I shall cut off her head and fill her mouth with garlic, and I shall drive a stake through her body.”Van Helsing to Dr. Seward, Chapter 15
2. “Oh, God, how it made me shudder to see it! With a careless motion, she flung to the ground, callous as a devil, the child that up to know she had clutched strenuously to her breast, growling over it as a dog growls over a bone. The child gave a sharp cry, and lay there moaning.” Dr. Seward, Chapter 16, regarding Lucy, the undead, walking back to her coffin with a small child.
3. “We all looked at Arthur. He saw, too, what we all did, the infinite kindness which suggested that his should be the hand which would restore Lucy to us as a holy, and not an unholy memory.”Dr. Seward, chapter 16, about Arthur Holmwood being the one to kill Lucy.
4. “The Thing in the coffin writhed; and a hideous, blood-curdling screech came from the opened red lips. The body shook and quivered and twisted in the wild contortions; the sharp white teeth champed together till the lips were cut, and the mouth was smeared with crimson foam.”Dr. Seward, Chapter 16, about Arthur driving the wooden stake into Lucy’s heart.
5. “He stood up and then sat down again, and the tears rained down his cheeks. I felt an infinite pity for him, and opened my arms unthinkingly. With a sob he laid his head on my shoulder, and cried like a wearied child, whist he shook with emotion.”Mina Murray, Chapter 17 with Holmwood
6. “I saw the invoice, and took note of it: ‘Fifty cases of common earth, to be used for experimental purposes.’”Jonathan Harker, Chapter 17 to Journal regarding a shipment from the Count
7. ”The nosferatu do not die like the bee when he sting once. He is only stronger; and being stronger, have yet more power to work evil. This vampire which is amongst us is of himself so strong in person as twenty men…”Professor Van Helsing, Chapter 18, to Dr. Seward, Mina, Lord Godalming, Mr. Morris
8. “Then there are the things which afflict him that he has no power, as the garlic that we know of; and as for things sacred, as this symbol, my crucifix…the branch of wild rose on his coffin keep him that he move not from it; a sacred bullet fired into the coffin kill him so that he be true dead; and as for the stake through him, we know already of its peace; or the cut-off head that giveth rest. We have seen it with our eyes.”Van Helsing to Mina, Harker, Dr. Seward, Holmwood, and Quincey Morris, Chapter 18, regarding Dracula.
9. “We were prepared for some unpleasantness, for as we were opening the door a faint, malodorous air seemed to exhale through the gaps, but none of us ever expected such an odor as we encountered. None of the others had met the Count at all at close quarters, and when I had seen him he was either in the fasting stage of his existence in his rooms or when he was gloated with fresh blood, in a ruined building open to the air…”Jonathan Harker, Chapter 19, with Van Helsing, Seward, Quincey and Art.
10. “Oh no, oh no! I want no souls. Life is all I want.”Renfield Chapter 20 Speaking with Dr. Seward
