QR Challenge: Get to Know Casey Library

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.


B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

1. The library catalog will be very helpful when you want to search for a book. This question is going to help you learn different ways of searching for books in the Casey library catalog. How many books does Casey have with the words "Middle School" in the title?38 If this is not the answer you found, try typing "Middle School into the search box and click on Title. The catalog will then tell you the number of books that Casey has with the words "Middle School" in their title.
2. A title search helps you to find books when you know the title of the book or part of it. Sometimes you do not know the name of the book, but you know that you need to find a book about a specific topic. When you need a book on a specific topic, but you do not know the title or author, you can do a Subject search. Try searching for materials on Energy and tell me how many sources the Casey library has.25 If this is not the answer you found, try typing "Energy" into the search box and click on Subject. This will tell you all of the materials classified by the subject Energy.

4. How are the books in the biography section organized? Hint: Look at the call number (the label on the bottom of the book spine.) (a) The books are organized by size. 5. Look at the call numbers for all of the picture books. What does every call number have in common on each book?If you noticed that all of the call numbers begin with E you pay very close attention to detail!
6. Take another close look at the call numbers on these books. After the E there should be at least three additional letters listed. What do these letters signify? How are the books organized?The letters after the E in the call number represent the first 3-4 letters of the author's last name. If you take a close look, you will notice that all of the picture books are alphabetized by the author's last name.
7. Talk with your group about what you think a Short Story is. Once you are done, write down your final answer. At the end of the scavenger hunt, we will go over the definition of a short story.A short story is a piece of fiction that is shorter than a novel. It is usually under 10,000 words. A short story typically focuses on the mood, or the feeling the story gives, rather than the plot.
8. Short stories are organized in a way similar to Picture Books and Fiction Books. The first two letters of the call number for all Short Stories is SC. Look at the remaining letters on the call number and, as a group, discuss how the books are organized. Write down your answer for discussion as a class.All of the Short Stories are arranged alphabetically by the first three letters of the author's last name. This is the same as Picture Books and Fiction Books.
9. The Puma's Lair is a really special place in the Casey Library! You must EARN the privilege of begin here to lounge with friends and do homework. If you want to take this challenge, you must first define all four words on the sign hanging above. Next, you have to put the four words into an order that makes sense. Last, but not least, you have to explain the rules of the lair based on the order of the words and what they mean. When you have completed all of this...You are officially allowed in the Puma's Lair!
10. Casey Library has a HUGE section of Non-Fiction books! Non-Fiction books are all written about things that are factual and true. Is this true or false?It's true! In Non-Fiction you can find books about animals, music, countries, bugs and so much more!
11. The call number of Non-Fiction books have numbers that range from 000 to 999. Right now you are in the 000 section. As you move along the Non-Fiction books, you will notice that the numbers get higher. Since you know the call numbers get higher from where you are, where do you think the 900-999 books are located? Write you answer down.The 900-999 books are located to the right of you by Ms. Christy's desk.
12. Discuss with your group what you believe Fiction books are about. Write down your definition of a Fiction book and we will discuss your answer as a class.Fiction books are books that are not true. The story is invented by the imagination.
13. These books are organized in a way that is similar to the Picture Books and the Short Stories. Every Fiction book's call number starts out with Fic. From here the books are organized in alphabetical order by three letters. What do the three letters after Fic represent?The are the first three letters of the author's last name.
