QR Challenge: Genetics Hunt

Created using the ClassTools QR Treasure Hunt Generator

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

C. TIPS / OTHER IDEAS

4. A detailed case study in how to set up a successful QR Scavenger Hunt using this tool can be found here.

Question

Answer

1. The type of gene that always shows itself is calledadominant gene
2. When traits from the parents blend together in the offspring, it is calledincomplete dominance
3. When a woman has a gene for a disorder, but does not show any sign of that disorder, she is called acarrier
4. Different versions of the same gene are known asalleles
5. Punnett squares can be used to predict the probability ofhaving an inherited disease or a genetically determined physical trait
6. If two people who are both carriers for a genetically inherited fatal recessive disease decide to become parents, what will be the odds that their children will also be carriers?50% or 2 out of 4
7. If a woman is homozygous normal and her husband is heterozygous for a genetically inherited recessive disease and they decide to become parents, what is the probability that they will have a healthy child?100% or 4 out of 4
8. The particular point on a chromosome where a gene is situated is called thelocus
9. The phenomenon where genes located near each other on a chromosome are inherited together is known aslinkage
10. In the garden pea, yellow cotyledon color is dominant to green, and inflated pod shape is dominant to the constricted form. Considering both of these traits jointly in self-fertilized dihybrids, the progeny appeared in the following numbers: 193 green, inflated 184 yellow constricted 556 yellow, inflated 61 green, constricted Do these genes assort independently? Support your answer using Chi-square analysis. Genes assort independently, Chi-square=0.312
