QR Challenge: The Quebec Conference

Created using the ClassTools QR Treasure Hunt Generator

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

Question

Answer

1. The Québec Conference took place from October 10–27, 1864.1.When did the Quebec Conference take place?
2. On 10 October, 33 delegates, including 2 from Newfoundland (as observers), met in Québec City to formulate a detailed plan for union.2.Why was the Quebec Conference held?
3. Representatives from the three Maritime colonies (Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick) and the Province of Canada (Ontario/Quebec) attended the Conference.3.What colonies attended the Conference?
4. The Maritime delegates were drawn from government; Canada was represented by its Cabinet, which set the agenda, proposed the resolutions and dominated the conference. Canadian Prime Minister Sir Étienne-Pascal Taché acted as chairman. Voting was by colony; Canada was given two votes.4.Who was the Chairman of the Conference?
5. John A. Macdonald of Upper Canada (Ontario) favoured a legislative union - that is, all important decisions should be made by a single, central government and legislature. However, the Maritime delegates opposed this degree of centralisation, and those from Lower Canada (Quebec) insisted on control over language, religion and civil law.5.What kind of union did John A. Macdonald want? Who opposed him?
6. The result was a compromise - a federal system, in which each province would have its own legislature, and powers were divided between the federal and provincial governments. There was also the problem of adequate representation for smaller provinces in the federal parliament.6.What was the compromise?
7. The delegates completed their work and adjourned 27 October. Their conclusions were embodied in 72 resolutions, which became the focus of the Confederation debates. Although the Québec Resolutions were formally adopted only by the Province of Canada, they formed the basis of the British North America Act, which created Canada.7.By the end of the Conference, how many resolutions were in the Quebec Resolutions.
8. The London Conference was the next step, to begin in December of 1866, in which Canadian, Nova Scotian and New Brunswick delegates will meet with the British government in London, England. It is at this conference that the British North America Act was created.8.What was the next step after the conclusion of the Quebec Conference?
