QR Challenge: Technology Outdoors

Created using the ClassTools QR Treasure Hunt Generator

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

C. TIPS / OTHER IDEAS

4. A detailed case study in how to set up a successful QR Scavenger Hunt using this tool can be found here.

Question

Answer

1. Your task is to use all of the sticks available to create a shape or a picture with as many right angles as possible. Put the blocks in the corner of each right angle to check that the angle is correct. How many right angles can you make? Take a photograph or draw a picture of your best shape.Return with an image.
2. Your task is to compose a rap or poem about the area you are standing in. What can you see, hear and feel around you? You should include some sounds from natural instruments (you will need to make these). When you are ready record your rap or poem on a Talking Tin. Don't forget to take the Talking Tin with you.Return with Talking Tin
3. Your task is to create a Sound Map. Take one piece of paper each. Spread out so that you are not too close to each other. Draw yourself in the middle of the paper. Now listen carefully - draw all the different sounds you can hear e.g. if you hear a bird singing in front of you then draw a bird at the top of the paper. If you hear footsteps on your right then draw feet on the right of the paper. When you have finished this task take your paper with you. Return with paper.
4. Your task is to carry out some warm up exercises. 1. Arm swinging - swing your left arm forwards 10 times then back 10 times. Do the same with your right arm. 2. Leg swinging - lean on a tree or wall for support. Swing your leg forward for a high kick and back into a back kick. Do 10 swings of each leg. 3. From a star shape, keeping a straight back, rotate down with one arm to touch the opposite ankle, then up again to star shape. Do 10 for each side then swap over and do the other side. 4. Find Two Trees in a Space (or two other features roughly 15m apart) Run from one tree to the other, touching it when you reach it. Do this 5 times.Nothing to return with.
5. Imagine you are pupil and these are your school grounds. New pupils will soon be arriving at the school. Your task is to create a short recording describing a feature in the school grounds. This recording will form part of a trail for new pupils. Decide together in your group what you want to say and record it onto one of the Talking Tins. Remember to take the Talking Tin with you when you are finished.Return with Talking Tin.
