QR Challenge: Diseases in dogs and cats

Created using the ClassTools QR Treasure Hunt Generator

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

Question

Answer

1. A cat is presented at reception and is due to come in to board for one week. You notice that she has a discharge from her eyes and nose. What should you do? This cat may have cat flu which will spread around your kennels. You should revert to company policy on this issue.
2. You are carrying out the late evening check on the dogs. You notice a red setter who has difficulty breathing and its tummy is distended what should you do This could be a gastric torsion so it is an emergency and needs to go to the vets ASAP
3. A cat comes into the kennels and after 3 days of a 1 week stay you notice a red round rash what would you do? This might be ringworm which is zoonotic and will spread to other cats. It should be isolated, the kennel should be appropriately disinfected and the cat should be seen by a vet for a diagnosis.
4. When cleaning a kennel please note 3 important factors to consider choice of disinfectant, cleaning the kennel first as organic matter may inhibit the effect and always use the correct dilution
5. A Dog is aggressive and is a kennel guarded what should you do? Never put yourself at risk. Perhaps choose an appropriate kennel that has a run attached. Sometimes the owner may be asked to come and get the dog, depending on company policy.
6. List PPE equipment that should be available and why disposable gloves, disposable suits and hats and possibly masks.
7. What handling equipment would be useful to have on site and why Gauntlet gloves, a dog catcher and a cat bag as some of the possibilities
