QR Challenge: Resources in Activity Tourism

Created using the ClassTools QR Treasure Hunt Generator

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

C. TIPS / OTHER IDEAS

Question

Answer

1. Well done and welcome to the finance department! You guessed correctly...capital investment is more than likely going to be needed when a business is started. Capital = money. It is not always cash as capital can be the value of buildings, equipment or loans. Financial assistance may be needed to get a new activity tourism company going. But what (or who) might a new organisation need to employ? (Hint where the staff of the Tourism Department based?) Employees
2. Well done! You guessed correctly...employees are needed to help provide a memorable and safe experience to customers. So who directs the staff? Any particular people? (Hint: who runs the college?)Management
3. Well done! Management oversee the employees and make sure that the organisation is running smoothly. They work closely with the staff to maintain good working relationships that allow the organisation as a whole to provide a memorable experience. They also work with the staff to maintain their canoes, boots, ropes, harnesses or any other necessary items. What is collective name for these necessary items? (Hint: what area in the college promotes fitness? You'll find the next answer near its reception)Equipment
4. Well done! Having suitable and appropriate equipment that is fit for purpose is vital for safe operating conditions. The majority of activity tourism businesses employ a small number of part time workers, often on seasonal contracts. The next question is – what is the name given to the way we describe customer buying habits that depend on the time of year? (Hint: what area of level four has an external garden?)Seasonality
5. Well done! Seasonality is the term used in tourism to describe customer buying habits influenced by the time of year. If it is too cold or rainy, people are discouraged from outdoor pursuits but when the weather is good, those same pursuits can see a spike in demand. But who are we talking about? What people are needed to come to the tourism business and spend their money? (Hint: What association in the college allows people to meet up associate?)Customers
6. Well done! Understanding customers is vitally important for any tourism business to be successful. Customer profiling is a technique used to identify who should be targeted with promotional activity. Age, gender, postcode, interests, characteristics etc. are all important considerations. Understanding the target market will help managers and marketers to design their promotional materials, based on what they know about the interests of that target market. But how do marketers get their message out? How does the college do it? (Hint: how does the college sell itself? Are there any giant images and videos?)Promotion
7. Well done! Promotional activity is important to make a company or organisation visible to potential customers. Without it, how would people know it is there? There are physical examples of promotional activity everywhere we look. From small flyers to billboards and TV...they play an important role. Now, head back to class to see if your group has won the prize!Finish
