QR Challenge: Abnormal Psychology Stations

Created using the ClassTools QR Treasure Hunt Generator

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

C. TIPS / OTHER IDEAS

4. A detailed case study in how to set up a successful QR Scavenger Hunt using this tool can be found here.

Question

Answer

1. Cultural Influences on Abnormality: Choose one disorder and one country from the two jars. Conduct online research to learn how your chosen disorder is viewed and treated in that country and by that country's culture. Type up one half page summary of your research and make sure to include source citations. Submit your document through Google Classroom.answers will vary
2. Neologisms: One characteristic of schizophrenia is a person's use of neologisms or unique terms used to describe an experience. Schizophrenics will call headaches "dome thump smasher" or a stomach ache "belly lions". Create a list of personal neologisms for 7 events or objects. For example, I would describe feeling my baby move as "belly tidal wave". Once you have your list, ask your partner to guess what each neologism refers to. Write down their answers. Submit your list and partner responses to Google Classroom.answers will vary
3. Jeannette: Read the information on Jeannette. Then type a half page response explaining how people viewed her behavior in the past, and how people would most likely view her behavior today. Would you diagnose her with an abnormal psychological disorder? Which one and why?answers will vary
4. Public Service Announcement: With your partner, write a script for a 30 second PSA on one of the disorders we've studied. Then film your PSA using a camera/phone. Create a WeVideo account and edit your video so that it is 30 seconds. Submit the link to Google Classroom or show me your video when you're finished. Research effective PSA videos by viewing some of the "More You Know" NBC videos on youtube.answers will vary
5. Analyzing Fictional Characters: Some of our most beloved animated and fictional characters are a little abnormal. Make a list of 7 characters from cartoons, books, and TV/movies and explain what abnormal disorder each has and what the evidence is. For example: Ariel from the Little Mermaid is a hoarder based on her extensive collection of junk. She collects multiples of the same item and hides them from other people. Submit your list to Google Classroom answers will vary
6. Mini Mental Status Exam: Take turns with your partner giving each other the Mini Mental Status Exam. Then, create a recording of varied whispers, phrases, and sounds, just like in the video clip we saw yesterday (no inappropriate language, although it can sound harsh). Then, while listening to the recording, take the quiz again and note any difference in your score. Write a summary of the experience including what it was like to hear the whispers and how it was trying to concentrate. Submit to Google Classroomanswers will vary
