QR Challenge: Jump-Up Day Scavenger Hunt

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.


B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

1. How do we use this pocket chart in middle school?All graded assignments are placed in here, and they go home with the student each Friday in your Friday folder. It is also used to store master copies of some classroom forms.
2. How do we use this whiteboard in middle school?Each morning, the daily lessons and homework assignments are recorded on the board, as well as any other important notes for the day. When students arrive, they record the daily assignments on their homework log. We review this together at the beginning and end of the school day!
3. Do I get my own locker?YES! You can decorate it however you wish!
4. What special opportunities do the middle school students get?Middle school students have special opportunities and privileges, like being classroom buddies with 1st grade, creating the yearbook, participating in special service projects, and taking leadership roles with the school play, LEST, and other campus events.
5. What are the different types of curriculum in middle school?We use a rotating curriculum for many of our middle school lessons. Next year, both 7th and 8th grade will be working on 8th grade curriculum in Language Arts, Social Studies, and Religion.
6. What books do I get to read in Language Arts next year?During trimester 2, you will read The Call of the Wild and the Adventures of Tom Sawyer. During trimester 3, you will read Across Five Aprils and To Kill a Mockingbird. The following year, we will loop to the 7th grade curriculum with such books as Galileo's Journal, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Anne Frank, and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.
7. What is our Social Studies topic next year?We will discover US History through our 8th grade curriculum. The following year, we will loop to the 7th grade curriculum with a focus on World History and Washington State History.
8. How do we earn rewards?Using the bead jar to reinforce and highlight positive behavior, the class as a whole earns beads. When all the beads transfer from one jar to the next, the students have earned a class celebration.
