QR Challenge: Sound Review

Created using the ClassTools QR Treasure Hunt Generator

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

C. TIPS / OTHER IDEAS

4. A detailed case study in how to set up a successful QR Scavenger Hunt using this tool can be found here.

1. What is sound?Sound is a disturbance that travels through a medium as a longitudinal wave.
2. What are the factors sound depend on?Elasticity, density and the temperature of the medium that it travels through.
3. How does temperature affect the speed of sound? At low temperature, the particles of a medium move more slowly then at high temperature.
4. Who was the first person to break the sound barrier on October 14, 1947?Captain Chuck Yeager
5. What is the Doppler Effect? When a sound source moves, the frequency of the waves changes cause the motion of the source adds to the motion of the waves.
6. If the frequency of a sound is doubled, what change will occur in it's speed? No change in speed.
7. What are the 3 mediums that sound travels through?Solid, liquid, and gases and for example, water
8. The loudness of different sounds is compared using a unit called the _____?Decibels
9. What describes your perception of a sound? Loudness describes your perception.
10. How fast is sound? It's about 1,100 feet per second.
11. If a wave has short wavelength, what type of frequency does it have?High wavelength
12. What are the three main parts of the ear? Outer ear, middle ear, and inner ear.
13. What are the reasons for hearing loss?Injury, infection, exposure to loud sounds, and aging.
