QR Challenge: What's the deal with cell organelles

Created using the ClassTools QR Treasure Hunt Generator

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

C. TIPS / OTHER IDEAS

Question

Answer

1. Number 1 is mighty mightyorganelle = mitochondria. Function: breaks down glucose to provide energy (ATP) for the cell
2. Number 2 does not have ribosomes attached to it Organelle Smooth Endoplasmic reticulum (sER). Function makes lipids, drug detoxification
3. Number 3 is covered in organelles where proteins are made Organelle = Rough Endoplasmic reticulum (rER). Function: moves proteins around the cell
4. Number 4 gel-like gluid that fills the inside of a cell organelle cytoplasm. function supports organelles
5. Number 5 can be attached to another organelle or floating in the cytoplasm organelle=ribosome Function= synthesize (makes) proteins
6. Number 6 is a storage bubble and is much larger in plants Organelle = vacuole. Function storage of water, nutrients or waste
7. Number 7 helps with cell division Organelle = centriole. Function helps in cell divisionand the formation of spindle fibers
8. Number 8 is the "guard" says who can enter the cell organelle = Cell membrane. Function= controls what enters the cell
9. Number 9 is where ribosomes are madeorganelle=nucleolus Function=makes ribosomes
10. Number 10 is the boss of the cell organelle=nucleus, Function=controls all cell activities contains DNA
11. Number 11 packages stuff Organelle - Golgi body. Function helps package proteins and lipids destined to be exported from the cell
12. Number 12 breaks down thingsOrganelle = lysosome Function breaks down excess or worn out cell parts
13. Number 13 are great supports Organelle = microfilaments. Function give shape to the cell and support all of its internal parts
14. Number 14 is made up of DNAOrganelle= chromosomes. Function made of DNA carry all the information used to help a cell grow, thrive and reproduce
15. Number 15 is only found in plants and needs sunlightOrganelle chloroplast. Function photosynthesis/makes glucose
16. Number 16 is the outermost layer in plant cells Organelle cell wall. Function maintains shape and protection
17. Number 17 is a motility organelleOrganelle flagellum. Function = movement
