| Question | Answer |
| Odysseus finds Nausicaa, the daughter of King Alcinous, on the beach. She suggests that he sneak into the back of the town because the local people do not like strangers—especially with the king’s daughter. Once he’s in town, she will introduce Odysseus to her father, the king, who can help him. As Odysseus enters the town, Athena covers him in a mist, making him invisible to the local people. As Athena advises, he first approaches Queen Arete and finds the help that he needs. | How does Odysseus sneak into town? How does Athena help him get help? | The king and queen first make Odysseus comfortable before he tells his story. Alcinous asks him to marry Nausicaa and wishes to give him a house. Then he offers Odysseus a boat and men to take him home. Alcinous gives Odysseus a feast before he leaves, presents him with magnificent gifts, and, with the guests, listens to his story. | How do King Alcinous and Queen Arete feel about Odysseus? What do they do for him? | Polyphemus, son of Poseidon, is one of the giant Cyclops—one-eyed monsters that shepherd sheep and live in caves on an island. Polyphemus’s cave is loaded with racks of cheese and he has more animals than his pens can hold. He thinks his people shouldn’t care about Zeus, because they are stronger than he. When he discovers Odysseus and his men, he begins eating the men—two at a time—and plans to eat Odysseus last. | Describe Polyphemus. How did he treat his guests? | Odysseus and his men can’t move the huge rock that blocks the door of Polyphemus’s cave. Odysseus decides to get the monster drunk, then blind him with a sharpened wooden beam while he sleeps. The blinded monster is enraged and, opening the cave to release his animals, feels their backs as they pass him at the cave entrance. Odysseus ties the animals in threes, with each of his men clinging to a center animal. They all escape to the waiting ship. However, the plan backfires when Odysseus identifies himself to Polyphemus. The Cyclops prays to his father Poseidon that Odysseus reach home late in another man’s ship, lose all his men, and find trouble at home when he gets there. | What is Odysseus’s plan of escape from the Cyclops? How does the plan backfire? | "Powerfully built: his thighs, calves, hands, and neck are large" | What does Odysseus look like. |
