There are many things, but 3 important ones were abolishing slavery through the Emancipation Proclamation, belief in a strong federal government and belief that states couldn’t secede from the Union.
2. What was General William Sherman known for? Led troops on the March to the Sea, Burning the city of Atlanta and giving Savannah to President Lincoln as a gift.
3. Name three things that General Robert E. Lee was known for. Commander of the Confederate Army, surrendered to General Grant at Appomattox Courthouse, VA and he was originally asked to command the Union army.
4. What was Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson’s role in the war? He was 2nd in command to Robert E. Lee, but died before the end of the war.
5. True or False: Ulysses S. Grant was the leader of the Union army and accepted General Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Courthouse. True
6. True or False: Jefferson Davis was the President of the Confederacy, and was blamed by many people for the South’s defeat. True
7. What happened during John Brown’s raid on Harper’s Ferry, VA? He led a raid on an armory with the intention of arming slaves, but a train came through and they let it go. The people on the train reported what was going on when they arrived in Washington. John Brown was caught and later hanged.
8. What were the three main conflicts that eventually led to the Civil War? Cultural (South was more agricultural and the North was more manufacturing), Economic (South depended on slave labor where the North didn’t) and Constitutional (South had strong beliefs in states’ rights but North believed in strong federal gov’t)
9. Where did General Lee surrender to General Grant? Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia
10. What was the importance of the book Uncle Tom’s Cabin? The book showed the evils of slavery and how mistreated most slaves were in the South.
11. Which battle was considered the turning point of the Civil War? The Battle of Gettysburg
12. Which battle marked the beginning of the Civil War? Fort Sumter
13. What were some of the advantages of the Union Army? larger population, more railroads, more resources
14. What were some of the advantages of the Confederate Army? More experienced military leaders, since most of the battles took place in the South they knew the terrain better, they were usually defending instead of attacking
15. What were some of the effects (good or bad) of the war? Many men died on both sides, much of the South was destroyed, disease was a huge problem, families in the North and South faced financial ruin when husbands and fathers went off to war and died, Northern farms and industry prospered since they provided supplies for the war effort.
