#4. DISCIPLINE: “Take a break” spot ideas"Take A Break" is a special space in the classroom where children can take a moment to decompress, take a breather, or think about making different choices.You can create a designated space in your classroom with a small basket of materials and a comfortable place to sit and write. The place should be inviting, uncluttered, and a bit removed from whole group areas including student tables (if possible).The basket can contain: Stress balls to squeeze; Sand timer to remind students not to stay too long; Notebook, pencils, and crayons to draw and write about feelings; Small stuffed animals to hug; Calm Down or Discovery bottles; Silly Putty or play dough; Mirror to see the emotion on his or her own face in order to recognize it; Self Calming cards4
#5. EMERGENCIES There are three different types of security measures to protect the students and staff from a threat. The type of situation will determine the steps taken. (1)SHELTER IN PLACE- EVERYONE in the building will gather in a designated area. Windows and doors will be sealed. No one will be permitted in or out of the building.(2)LOCKDOWN- Staff and students will remain in a locked room, which will not be unlocked for anyone. Or, if escape is the best option, staff will lead students in doing this. (3)EVACUATION- Staff and students will exit the building and remain in a common meeting place.5

#7. ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES FOR REPORTING STUDENT ABSENCES BY PARENTS Each morning, between 8:45 and 9:00 a.m., every homeroom teacher must take attendance in eSchool. Send all excuse notes received from parents and doctors to main office in the “Notes for the Office” envelope/folder on the morning they are received. Notes about early dismissals, bus changes, etc., need to be sent down in in the morning after the teacher makes a note about the situation. Communicate to parents/guardians, the following day, their lapse in sending signed and dated absentee notes to school. Any time that a student is out for more than three days consecutively, please alert the nursing staff about the situation so a nurse can investigate. Teachers must also work closely with the nursing staff for students who have multiple absences and assisting parents with submitting notes.
#8. CELL PHONE POLICY FOR STAFF Cell phone use is prohibited during school hours unless you are on your lunch and/or break. If there is a personal nature you must address with using your phone to please inform Administration of your situation.  Unless being used for a student/school emergency they should NEVER be used in the presence of students unless it is instructionally related.8

EMERGENCIES WITHIN THE COLWYCK BUILDING:- Move the children and staff in rooms away from the problem first. - Notify the main office and report the type of emergency and where it is located. -If it is determined that the support of the Crisis Response Team is needed, the office will announce the “Security Team” please report to a specific location” using the PA system.  Further instructions will follow if needed.-Mrs. Daniels or designee will respond immediately if they are in the building.9
#10. FIRE DRILLS- All classroom teachers, therapists and specialists are responsible for teaching fire drill procedures to students in their work area, and to provide guided practice in evacuating those areas, whenever seeing students in a new location.- As soon as the fire alarm is sounded, staff are to begin removing students as quickly as possible.- Teachers – take a class roster with you; located by the classroom door.- Before final evacuation of any room, close all windows, turn off lights and close doors.10
#11. FIRE DRILLS- All classroom, therapist, and specialist staff members are to assist students with exiting the building from their work locations, after all students are safely escorted out of the building, staff that are not needed for supervision outside should return to the building to assist other students in exiting.- Once it is determined that everyone is out of the building, an administrative staff member will give a signal of  “All Clear” for staff and students to return.11
#12. LEAVING THE BUILDING DURING THE STUDENT DAY Any staff member leaving the building must sign out at the main office and also sign back in when they return to school. When requesting to arrive or leave the building during the school work day to attend a medical appointment, school conference etc., you may be asked to submit documentation from the medical office, school etc., before approval is granted. Please review the Stepping Out for a Moment Form found in the Main Office copy room.12
#13. LESSON PLANS All teachers are required to maintain up-to-date lesson plans.  It is an expectation that teachers collaborate when planning. Paras should communicate with the teacher about the lesson plans and how and what ways should they assist in the gathering of lesson materials and instructional delivery for the activity.13
#14. RECESS On inclement weather days, including days below safe temperatures, an announcement will be made via email or during the morning announcements indicating that there will be no outside recess that day.  This decision will be made in collaboration with the school nurses and administration.14
#15. RECESS-FOR SAFETY REASONS make sure your team has a walkie talkie on the playground at all times! This is to allow you to contact the nurse or office in an emergency, and for the office to contact you when necessary.15
#16. SAFETY POLICY-STAFF-Staff is committed to assuring that the highest level of safety is maintained within our building on a daily basis. -All exterior doors used to facilitate the arrival of staff from various parking areas have key pass access.  Staff may use their key between the hours of 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM.- All doors, except the main entrance doors, are to be locked with the exception of the atrium door. Staff leaving the building during the day after 8:30 AM., for any reason, will  need to return to the school through the main entrance or atrium doors.16
#17. SUBSTITUTE LESSON PLANS-When a teacher is absent, lesson plans for substitutes must be available.  Each teacher is required by the Employee Agreement to have instructional plans for three days in advance available for substitute teachers.  We request 5 days.-Plans need to be replaced as they are used throughout the year so that a total of three days is always on hand. -Location of the plans must be communicated to the Department Chair and Administration. -Copies should be run off for each lesson and stored in your classroom binder.  This is due by September 15th.   EVERY MINUTE MATTERS.17
