Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

Question

Answer

1. INFORMATION 1: World war 1 occurred 107 years ago in the year 1914. In December 1914, 20,000 Australian troops went to Egypt for training and to protect British interests. In March, Australian troops left Egypt for the Greek islands, and on the 25th of April 1915, 16,000 Australian troops landed on Gallipoli. On the first day, 2,000 soldiers died. Throughout the entire conflict, 60,000 soldiers fought, totalling 8041 Australian deaths
2. INFORMATION 2: Troops jumped out of the boats into the water when landing at ANZAC Cove. The water went above their necks as attacks rained down on them. Before they were safe from danger, the ANZACs needed to dig trenches and run uphill. It was a terrifying day for all soldiers. No soldier was safe, not even soldiers as young as 14.
3. INFORMATION 3: The ANZACs fought in Galipili for 8 months. During the 8 months, soldiers were required to sleep in trenches under the stars. It was a very trying time, with 7 soldiers receiving the Victorian Cross (an honourable achievement).
4. INFORMATION 4: Australia was involved in many important battles throughout WWI. When commemorating ANZAC day, Australian citizens are also commemorating the people who fought and served our country in other past and present conflicts. People from Turkey also commemorate the lives lost at that significant battleground.
5. INFORMATION 5: A vast majority of the soldiers had very little provided. They ate very little (an onion, jam, corned beef, dry biscuit and a few slices of cheese), didn't have the correct equipment and had extremely poor hygiene standards (making the environment perfect for infection and disease). One of the biggest killers in the war was disease, thought to contribute to 2 million deaths!
