Mary Shelley

I was born the 30th of August of 1797 in London. My mum died when I was born so my dad had to take care of my older half-sister and me. When I was four, my dad married his neighbour, Mary Jane Clairmont and we lived together as a normal family.
In 1814, I began a romantic relationship with one of my father’s political followers, Percy Bysshe Shelley. Together, we lived in France and travelled around Europe and when we returned to England I was pregnant. We got married in 1816.
Throughout my life I have lived in England, France, Italy and Switzerland.
I was an English novelist, short story writer, dramatist, essayist, biographer, and travel writer, best known for my Gothic novel Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus in 1818. I also edited and promoted the works of my husband, the Romantic poet and philosopher Percy Bysshe Shelley. Until the 1970s, I was known mainly for my efforts to publish Percy Shelley's works and for my novel Frankenstein, which remains widely read and has inspired many theatrical and film adaptations.
I died the 1st of February of 1851.
