Whenever a national\u00a0Bank introduces or withdraws a particular historical character from a banknote, it is a matter of keen debate and discussion.<\/p>\n

The UK<\/h3>\n

In 2013, the decision to replace Elizabeth Fry<\/a> on the \u00a35 note with Winston Churchill led to a petition complaining about the lack of women on banknotes<\/a> that resulted in a commitment that Jane Austen<\/a> would appear on the \u00a310 note from 2017.<\/p>\n

Currently, there is another petition underway to depict Aneurin Bevan on the \u00a320 note<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The USA<\/h3>\n

There is a similar\u00a0campaign to replace Andrew Jackson on the American $20 bill<\/a>, perhaps with Clara Barton<\/a>:<\/p>\n

The lack of banknotes depicting women is also a source of concern in Canada, where there yet another petition<\/a> underway which already has some fantastic ‘mock-ups’ of possible contenders:<\/p>\n

Student project: Who do YOU think deserves to be on a banknote?<\/h2>\n

After introducing the importance of banknotes in this way, ask students who they think deserves to be commemorated on a banknote, and why. This forms a very neat conclusion to the “Who is your History Hero?” project<\/a> at ActiveHistory<\/a>, for example. Students could then design the banknote themselves, including:<\/p>\n
