{"id":3425,"date":"2015-03-05T21:03:55","date_gmt":"2015-03-05T21:03:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/?p=3425"},"modified":"2023-01-15T15:59:55","modified_gmt":"2023-01-15T15:59:55","slug":"design-destroy-a-banknote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/design-destroy-a-banknote\/","title":{"rendered":"Where are the Women?! &#8211; Design \/ Destroy a Banknote!"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Overview<a href=\"http:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/car.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3432\" src=\"http:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/car-1024x512.jpg\" alt=\"Mark Carney Launches New U.K. Banknote\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/car-1024x512.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/car-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/car.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Whenever a national\u00a0Bank introduces or withdraws a particular historical character from a banknote, it is a matter of keen debate and discussion.<\/p>\n<h3>The UK<\/h3>\n<p>In 2013, the decision to replace <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elizabeth_Fry\">Elizabeth Fry<\/a> on the \u00a35 note with Winston Churchill led to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/we-need-women-on-british-banknotes\">petition complaining about the lack of women on banknotes<\/a> that resulted in a commitment that <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jane_Austen\">Jane Austen<\/a> would appear on the \u00a310 note from 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, there is another petition underway to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/news\/wales-news\/group-gathers-more-4000-signatures-8651748\">depict Aneurin Bevan on the \u00a320 note<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3428\" src=\"http:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/bevan.jpg\" alt=\"bevan\" width=\"600\" height=\"328\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/bevan.jpg 878w, https:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/bevan-300x164.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>The USA<\/h3>\n<p>There is a similar\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/theweek.com\/speedreads\/542346\/new-campaign-underway-push-andrew-jackson-20-replace-woman\">campaign to replace Andrew Jackson on the American $20 bill<\/a>, perhaps with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clara_Barton\">Clara Barton<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Screen-Shot-2015-03-08-at-20.46.16.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3437 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Screen-Shot-2015-03-08-at-20.46.16-1024x448.jpg\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-03-08 at 20.46.16\" width=\"600\" height=\"262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Screen-Shot-2015-03-08-at-20.46.16-1024x448.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Screen-Shot-2015-03-08-at-20.46.16-300x131.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Screen-Shot-2015-03-08-at-20.46.16.jpg 1148w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Canada<\/h3>\n<p>The lack of banknotes depicting women is also a source of concern in Canada, where there yet another <a href=\"http:\/\/womenonbanknotes.ca\">petition<\/a> underway which already has some fantastic &#8216;mock-ups&#8217; of possible contenders:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Screen-Shot-2015-03-09-at-06.03.06.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3436\" src=\"http:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Screen-Shot-2015-03-09-at-06.03.06.jpg\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-03-09 at 06.03.06\" width=\"600\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Screen-Shot-2015-03-09-at-06.03.06.jpg 932w, https:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Screen-Shot-2015-03-09-at-06.03.06-300x135.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Student project: Who do YOU think deserves to be on a banknote?<\/h2>\n<p>After introducing the importance of banknotes in this way, ask students who they think deserves to be commemorated on a banknote, and why. This forms a very neat conclusion to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.activehistory.co.uk\/Miscellaneous\/menus\/Year_9\/history-hero.php\">&#8220;Who is your History Hero?&#8221; project<\/a> at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.activehistory.co.uk\">ActiveHistory<\/a>, for example. Then, different denominations of currency should be designed to reflect the respective importance of the characters: the character chosen for the \u00a350 note, for example, should be considered more significant than the character on a \u00a35 note.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Idea 2: Who should be REMOVED from circulation?<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The question could be reversed. After\u00a0asking students who deserves to be introduced onto a banknote, challenge them to decide who therefore needs to be <strong>removed<\/strong> from current circulation in order to\u00a0make way for them. Provide them with this\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bankofengland.co.uk\/banknotes\/Pages\/characters\/default.aspx\">list of characters currently depicted on British banknotes<\/a>, divide these figures between people in the class, and get the students to research each one and conduct a &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/balloon-debates\/\">balloon debate<\/a>&#8216; to decide who should be &#8216;dropped&#8217;.<\/li>\n<li>Discussion should take place on who should decide upon which people appear on banknotes. The Bank of England recently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bankofengland.co.uk\/banknotes\/Pages\/characters\/default.aspx\">changed its rules<\/a> on this.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Idea 3: Banknotes around the world<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The project could be expanded into an entire unit. The <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_people_on_banknotes\">people commemorated on different currencies around the world<\/a> could be researched, then the overall results contrasted and compared in a variety of ways. Are women commemorated in equal proportion to men in different countries? Is there a focus on literary, or scientific figures, or a balance?
