{"id":4526,"date":"2016-02-03T20:41:56","date_gmt":"2016-02-03T20:41:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/?p=4526"},"modified":"2016-07-15T17:09:48","modified_gmt":"2016-07-15T17:09:48","slug":"using-the-battleships-format-to-teach-historical-interpretations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/using-the-battleships-format-to-teach-historical-interpretations\/","title":{"rendered":"Using the &#8216;Battleships&#8217; format to Teach Historical Interpretations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Overview: &#8220;Interpretation Battleships!&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This activity is a development of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/use-matrix-grids-to-judge-two-issues-simultaneously\/\">matrix exercise<\/a>, designed to make it both more sophisticated and more engaging for students. It is an effective way of getting students to analyse lots of information analytically for\u00a0a fresh topic. For example,\u00a0I recently used the approach very effectively\u00a0with my IB Year 12 students (aged 16-17) to\u00a0teach Eisenhower&#8217;s foreign policy without any prior knowledge or preparatory study.<\/p>\n<p>As per the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/use-matrix-grids-to-judge-two-issues-simultaneously\/\">matrix format<\/a>, students are given two key questions to consider (e.g. &#8220;How successful&#8230;?&#8221; and &#8220;How innovative&#8230;?&#8221;) and then place particular pieces of evidence along the horizontal and vertical axes\u00a0to reflect what is suggests is the correct spot with regard to\u00a0each question\u00a0(the vertical axis represents two opposing views on the first question &#8211; e.g. success v. failure, the horizontal axis the second &#8211; e.g. revolutionary\u00a0v. reactionary). \u00a0In the following example, students considered\u00a0the two questions &#8220;<strong>How successful<\/strong>\u00a0was Eisenhower&#8217;s foreign policy?&#8221; and &#8220;<strong>How new<\/strong>\u00a0was Eisenhower&#8217;s &#8216;New Look&#8217; foreign policy?&#8221; (two common questions which through this exercise we can analyse simultaneously):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/-1\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4527\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4527\" src=\"http:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/-1-1024x520.\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2016-02-03 at 16.56.45\" width=\"1024\" height=\"520\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/-1-1024x520. 1024w, https:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/-1-300x152. 300w, https:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/-1-768x390. 768w, https:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/-1 1326w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, the twist this time is to turn the whole process into a team competition called \u2018Interpretation Battleships\u2019. This involves subdividing each\u00a0quadrant of the matrix into four boxes (thereby creating 16 boxes in total).\u00a0These are then individually referenced using a simple key (horizontal = letters, vertical = numbers, creating a grid of 16 squares that can be referenced as A1 to D4):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/-2\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4528\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4528\" src=\"http:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/-2-1024x473.\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2016-02-03 at 16.58.09\" width=\"1024\" height=\"473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/-2-1024x473. 1024w, https:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/-2-300x139. 300w, https:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/-2-768x355. 768w, https:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/-2 1446w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Phase 1: Individual Research \/ Group Discussion<\/h3>\n<p>Each member of the class is provided with the pieces of evidence that will be considered (in the case of my lesson, this consisted of a very detailed article covering nine\u00a0different policy areas, each considered under a different subheading). These policy areas are divided between\u00a0three different teams. Working individually at first, then comparing their ideas with the rest of their team to reach a group agreement, students decide where their allocated\u00a0policy areas \/ pieces of evidence belong in the\u00a0matrix, and write a sentence of explanation on scrap paper ready for the game.<\/p>\n<p>When they are finished with these allocated areas, they should repeat the process a second time for the remaining\u00a0factors so that they have had change to consider them all. At the end of the process, each team will end up with their own version of a matrix which might look something like this:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4529\" src=\"http:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/-3-1024x489.\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2016-02-03 at 16.52.39\" width=\"1024\" height=\"489\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/-3-1024x489. 1024w, https:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/-3-300x143. 300w, https:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/-3-768x367. 768w, https:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/-3-1024x489-350x167. 350w, https:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/-3 1424w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Phase 2: Playing\u00a0&#8220;Interpretation Battleships!&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p>When everyone is ready, the first policy area \/ piece of evidence\u00a0is introduced.<\/p>\n<p>The group\u00a0who was allocated\u00a0this piece of evidence (the &#8220;Quizmaster&#8221; team)\u00a0stays quiet whilst the other two teams nominate the cell of the table that they think it\u00a0should belong in and explain why. They should try to persuade the Quizmaster team with\u00a0their reasoning!<\/p>\n<p>The Quizmaster team listens carefully and then confers to decide whether they want to keep this factor in the cell they originally decided, or whether they want to adjust their decision based on the ideas they have heard.<\/p>\n<p>The Quizmaster team then announces where, after full consideration, the factor belongs in the grid, and explains their choice. The teacher should record this decision in a &#8216;class&#8217; version of the matrix.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0competing team gets one point if it\u00a0placed the factor in the same quadrant as the Quizmaster team, and a further point if they placed it in exactly the same cell.<\/p>\n<p>All students take notes to make sure they are clear for the reasoning behind this, and then the\u00a0process is then repeated for the remaining cells of the table.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Taking it further<\/h3>\n<p>This approach is a really efficient way of getting through a big topic very efficiently and analytically which might otherwise involve inordinate amounts of classroom reading and teacher-led discussions.<\/p>\n<p>It could\u00a0be followed with a source-work exercise, where the views of key historians on the issues covered have to be organised in the matrix. This would be a very good extension \/ homework task for individual students to ensure that historiography was\u00a0incorporated.<\/p>\n<p>Each quadrant of the completed diagram forms the basis of a four-paragraph essay addressing both of the key questions covered at the start of the activity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Overview: &#8220;Interpretation Battleships!&#8221; This activity is a development of the matrix exercise, designed to make it both more sophisticated and more engaging for students.
