{"id":4670,"date":"2016-05-11T12:43:43","date_gmt":"2016-05-11T12:43:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/?p=4670"},"modified":"2016-07-16T12:29:57","modified_gmt":"2016-07-16T12:29:57","slug":"students-design-an-inspirational-quote-poster-for-a-rotating-display","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/students-design-an-inspirational-quote-poster-for-a-rotating-display\/","title":{"rendered":"Students design an &#8220;Inspirational Quote&#8221; poster for a rotating display"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Overview<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4675 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/-47-300x230.\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2016-05-11 at 14.41.21\" width=\"300\" height=\"230\" \/><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Get students to locate a thought-provoking quote about a topic, theme, or by a person related to the current topic of study using a tool such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brainyquote.com\/quotes\/keywords\/creativity.html\">BrainyQuote<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Get them to turn these\u00a0into posters using a website such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canva.com\">Canva<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Display one poster per week on your classroom door as a &#8216;thought for\u00a0the week&#8217;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Case Study<\/h2>\n<p>As a development this year of my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.activehistory.co.uk\/Miscellaneous\/menus\/Year_9\/history-hero.php\">study unit on &#8220;Who is your history hero?&#8221;<\/a>, I got my students to locate a thought-provoking quote by or about\u00a0their chosen character, or alternatively a quote about one of the &#8216;heroic&#8217; qualities which they identified (determined, creative, principled and so on). There are plenty of such quotes available in searchable websites such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brainyquote.com\/quotes\/keywords\/creativity.html\">BrainyQuote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Next, students used the free service at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.canva.com\">Canva<\/a>\u00a0to turn their quote into a poster. My intention is to rotate\u00a0the best posters as a &#8220;Thought for the week&#8221;\u00a0display on my classroom door.<\/p>\n<h2>Taking it further<\/h2>\n<p>Students could be encouraged to provide an observation on the quote by leaving a block of post-it notes nearby. These can then be turned into follow-up quotes from the students themselves so that the &#8220;quote of the week&#8221; turns into an ongoing conversation. I&#8217;ve started doing this with the &#8216;quote of the week&#8217; outside my own classroom after one of our students wrote a post-it note in reply to a Martin Luther King quote, and I then turned this into the following week&#8217;s poster:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4682\" src=\"http:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/-50\" alt=\"ciu3aahwgaaxti7_458\" width=\"600\" height=\"844\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As an extension activity, students could research the author of the quote and provide a brief biographical summary as part of the poster and a web link \/ QR code with further information. These biographical summarise could be given focus with suggested topic sentences (&#8220;Thomas Edison was a &#8230;.. \/ I regard him as a heroic figure because&#8230; \/ I particularly like this quote because&#8230;&#8221;).
