{"id":4697,"date":"2016-06-08T17:53:38","date_gmt":"2016-06-08T17:53:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/?p=4697"},"modified":"2016-07-15T11:41:28","modified_gmt":"2016-07-15T11:41:28","slug":"using-googles-new-3d-interior-views-for-virtual-field-trips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/using-googles-new-3d-interior-views-for-virtual-field-trips\/","title":{"rendered":"Using Google&#8217;s new 3D interior views for virtual field trips"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The potential of Google Maps for producing Virtual Field Trips is well-established, and I even coded my own online application (&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.classtools.net\/mapgame\/\">Mission MapQuest<\/a>&#8220;) which allows students and teachers to quickly design their own (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/mission-mapquest-create-your-own-google-maps-online-scavenger-hunt\/\">blogpost here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>A particularly strong feature of Google Maps is the &#8216;Street View&#8217; facility, which is now being extended to enable users to venture inside, rather than just around, some key buildings and monuments.<\/p>\n<p>I have started to use this in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.activehistory.co.uk\/Miscellaneous\/menus\/Year_7\/Medieval_Religion.htm#GTour\">my studies of Gothic and Romanesque architecture<\/a> with my students. I have located five British cathedrals, and I will ask students to use the tours to complete various tasks rather than just glide around them aimlessly, for example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Which of these cathedrals would you describe as being the &#8216;odd one out&#8217; and why?<\/li>\n<li>Which of these two cathedrals are the most similar? Explain your answer.<\/li>\n<li>Which of these cathedrals do you like the most? Explain your answer with appropriate adjectives.<\/li>\n<li>Position yourself in a spot within one cathedral to highlight its symmetry most effectively. Take a screenshot to show your teacher.<\/li>\n<li>Position yourself in a spot within one cathedral that you think shows as many key architectural features as possible.
