{"id":4904,"date":"2016-11-14T14:01:04","date_gmt":"2016-11-14T14:01:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/?p=4904"},"modified":"2023-01-14T17:23:08","modified_gmt":"2023-01-14T17:23:08","slug":"design-a-theme-park-based-around-the-study-topic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/design-a-theme-park-based-around-the-study-topic\/","title":{"rendered":"Design a theme park based around the study topic"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Overview<\/h3>\n<p>After hearing of a genuine plan to build a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/magazine-17397172\">theme park centered around the Emperor Napoleon<\/a>\u00a0and the story of <a href=\"http:\/\/backinthebronx.com\/cgi-bin\/dada\/mail.cgi\/archive\/bronxezine\/newest\/\">Freedom Land theme park in the USA<\/a>, I thought it would be an interesting idea to get students to come up with a proposal for a theme park designed to entertain and educate visitors about a particular topic of study. Rides, games and facilities should all tie-in with the people, events, themes and concepts associated with the topic. These are then presented to the teacher, in role as a venture capitalist, who then declares an overall winner.<\/p>\n<p>This task could either be tackled at the end of a topic, to consolidate and extend existing knowledge, or right at the start, to provide students with a focused research and transformation task which provides them with an overview of the topic in question.<\/p>\n<h3>Case study<\/h3>\n<p>Before starting a study of the Tudor period, students are put into groups and asked to discuss any theme parks they have visited, what their favourite rides were, and to identify what the actual\u00a0&#8216;theme&#8217; of each park was. Some of these themes are pretty obvious (Disneyland), some are more clearly didactic in nature (Europapark) and others have no discernible themes at all (Allton Towers).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4905\" style=\"width: 936px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4905\" class=\"wp-image-4905 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.classtools.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/-95\" alt=\"capture\" width=\"926\" height=\"497\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4905\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Europapark: themed around the cultures of different countries in Europe<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Next, tell students that a millionaire businessperson is keen to invest a large sum of money with the individual or group that comes up with the theme park which most successfully matches entertainment with educational value. The various zones, rides, facilities, merchandise, logo, mascots and so on will all need to integrate\u00a0effectively with the topic.
