What and When

The policy only allows the Chinses poeple to have one child otherwise they will get fines

It was first put in place in 1979 by the government and is still in place now

There are exceptions to those living in rural areas, those who have twins and ethnic minorities

Where and Why

The policy was put in place because Chinas population had increased rapidly and the government needed to take action

How

There was many ways they encouraged th epopulaiton to have one chid these are some of them:

Higher wages

Interest free loans

Retirement funds

Priority housing and school enrollment

Penalties for having more than one child:

Fines frim $370 to $12,800

Pressure to abort pregnancy

Confiscated belongings

Getting fired from work

Advantages

The one child policy has prevented 400 million births since 1979

The average number of children born per woman has fell b over 50% comparded to 1955

Chinas 1.54 fertility rate is well below the worlds average of 2.56

It is better for Chinas economy and less pollution

Places are less overcrowded

Chinas resources will not run out

The population has been reduced down to 1.2 billion

Disadvantages

Children in China wont know what its like to have a sibling

Baby girls are being killed because males are the prefered gender

Each day in 2009 there were more than 35,000 forced abortions in China

There is 120 male births for every 100 girls

The one boy which is brought up can become used to being

spoilt

With families only wanting a boy the male to female rate becomes unblanced

This leaves many Chinese men without wives

It will lead to an ageing populaiton because there will be too many old dependants
