The Treaty of Versailles was placed at the top of the Diamond because it fostered an environment where toxic ideologies could breed easily. In addition, if not for the Treaty of Versailles, Germany would not have sought revenge on the Allies. The economic depression was in part caused by the reparations required by the Treaty of Versailles’s, but it too allowed desperation to poison the minds of civilians, allowing them to support leaders and ideologies they wouldn't normally support. This had a flow on effect to the Role of Hitler and the Third Reich, as Hitler gained a lot of his popularity due to unemployment and other problems caused by the economic depression by manipulating this to appealing to fear of civilians. Hitler is one of the main aggressors that lead to the outbreak of World War Two, which may have been prevented by Failure of the League of Nations. The Failure of the League of Nations was caused mainly by inaction. It encouraged aggression on the behalf of Hitler, as he knew he wouldn't need to face any consequences. Furthermore, this has a flow on effect to American Isolationism. America may have been the only level headed influence within the League, with a somewhat intact military, however, their refusal to contribute due to their policy of Isolationism meant that Hitler was able to get away with many things. This was also enhanced the Policy of Appeasement, whereby France and Britain gave in to Germany, Italy and Japans territorial demands as far as possible, in an attempt to avoid conflict. Furthermore, another of the main aggressors that contributed to the outbreak of World War Two were the Italian Fascists, as they desired to expand their land and territory. This encouraged their aggression and strong sense of nationalism, triggering Word War Two in a lot of ways. To an extent, fascism was inspired by Nazism, so while they had the same effect on the outbreak of World War Two, Nazism may have been the catalyst for Fascism. The Spanish Civil war led to Hitler finding an opportunity to fight communism and give German troops training practice, encouraging Hitler to manipulate countries and strengthen ties with Italy. This comes after Failure of the League of Nations as part of Hitler's encouragement came from the League turning a blind eye on his actions, despite him breaking the terms of the Treaty of Versailles. Finally, Rise of a Militaristic Japan comes at the bottom of the Diamond because while Militarism in Japan had devastating effects in World War Two, it did not contribute to the outbreak of world war two because World War Two was already underway before Britain and the US declared war on Japan in December 1941.
