Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

Question

Answer

1. CDs are on sale at two stores. Future Shop advertises "Buy 1 get 1 free". Wal-mart says "50% off all CDs". Where would you buy your CDs? Explain your reasoning by providing a comparison of how much it would cost for 2 CDs purchased at each store. The cost of 1 CD is $20?If one CD is $20 plus HST. At Future Shop it would cost 22.80 for one and $2.80 for the second because you would have to pay the HST on the second one. So it would be $25.60 total. At Walmart is would cost 2($10 + $2.80). The total cost would be $25.60. The cost would be the same at both locations.
2.
3. Determine the percentage of the grid that is shaded. How many more squares would you need to shade to increase your design by 110%, 150%, 300%?3(There are 50/100 squares shaded in the grid.) So to increase by 110% shade 55 more squares. To increase by 150% shade 75 more squares. To increase by 300% shade 150 more squares.3
4.
5. Kennedy was asked to shade each of the following numbers on 10 by 10 grids. If one 10 x 10 grid represents one whole or 100%, which of the following numbers would have the least number of squares shaded? The most? Here are the numbers - 3/2 0.195 120% Explain your answers?43/2 = 150% 0.195 = 19.5% 120%. So 3/2 would have the most shading. 0.195 would have the least shading.4
6.
7. William’s father said “In my youth I could buy a chocolate bar and a pop for 20 cents." What would be a typical cost for these items today? Estimate the percent increase this represents?5Today it would cost about $4. ($4.00 - $0.20)/0.20 = $3.80/0.20 = 1900%. This represents an increase of 1900%.5
