Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

It has three quiet rooms for studying, 20 computers and a printer for student use, teachers and aides for tutoring in every class(including before school, at lunch, and after school, or just a place to do homework, missed tests and assignments! 2. This is the Culinary Arts program! Did you know that our students learn all of the ins and outs of a professional kitchen, and that they make and serve between 150-200 meals per day? The amazing menu ranges from Vietnamese pork burgers, Korean beef short ribs and sushi, to lasagna, salads, paninis, and salmon ratatouille with polenta! Yum!!!peas
3. This is the Choral Program...Did you know that the program has performed in Victoria, Disneyland, Vancouver and many other places, and this year they are heading to perform in the Big Apple, New York City! In 2011 both the junior and senior choirs won golds in Anaheim while competing against some of the best choir groups on the continent! Show choirs here at Grandin are not auditioned so come one, come all!!!tomato
4. This is the band room! Did you know that our Bishop Grandin Marching Ghosts is the only High School marching show band in Calgary. Beginning with humble origins, the program has grown significantly since it was founded in 1986. The marching ghosts now support a band size of over 100 musicians. The Marching Ghosts perform all over the world and are internationally recognized. Some of the places they have performed include, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, USA, and all over Canada! They just recently played at the halftime show at the Stampeder's playoff game!oranges
5. This is the Drama Room! Did you know that the Bishop Grandin Drama program hosts two major performances every year that each draw a large audience. The program provides an excellent opportunity for students to develop performances skills that they will use for the rest of their lives. Students interested in the Drama program should enroll in Drama 10, 20, or 30 and audition for the semi-annual plays!lettuce
6. Did you know that Bishop Grandin High School is one of the largest in Calgary, serving around1600 students in the communities of south Calgary. The program offerings include all of the academic disciplines, an Advanced Placement (A.P.) program, extensive art, drama, choir and music programs including an elite marching band, an Extended French program, a Knowledge and Employability Program, a Registered Apprentice program, International Languages, an Active Life Skills physical education program, and an extensive Career and Technology Studies program. Bishop Grandin is also noted for competitive sports teams.grapes
7. Did you know that Bishop Grandin has a very successful athletics program? Since the school's inception the Ghosts have won 86 city championships in sports such as soccer, track, badminton, rugby and cross country! Basketball alone has 21 championships, wrestling (16), volleyball (15), and football(11)! Come out for our teams, or come out to cheer on your Ghosts!prunes
8. This is the cosmetology Department! Did you know that our cosmetology program serves students as well as members of our community? Haircuts and colours, highlights, facials, manicures, pedicures and yes, even beard trims are offered from this full service program!spinach
9. This is the science department! Did you know that we have a Robotics Team that has won the World Championship in St Louis in 2011? They also have travelled to Toronto as well as Atlanta! The goal is to come up with a robot in six weeks time to play a certain game... Best bot wins!!!broccoli
10. This is the English Department! Did you know that we have a Speech and Debate club? The club provides students an opportunity to develop and enhance their oratory abilities as well as their argumentation structure. There are many speech categories in which students can participate. The categories include original oratory, impromptu, monologue, duet acting, poetry, and prose. The highlights of the competition season are the regionals and provincial championships that occur in March.turnips
11. Did you know Bishop Grandin participates in the Best Buddies program? Best Buddies is a national charitable organization that focuses on student friendships with people with intellectual disabilities. Those participating in the program feel it is important to give students with intellectual disabilities the chance to participate in friendship experiences. Students with disabilities often miss out on activities regular people take for granted. Those who become a part of the program often find that they develop strong and lasting friendships with the students that they help. This program is an overall rewarding experience and is an integral component of the Bishop Grandin's Christian message.apples
12. Did you know that Bishop Grandin students have been an important partner with the Water Project since 2004??? The students are taking action with this local and global issue by raising awareness about basic sanitation, household water treatments and hygiene education...through bake sales, shirt sales, silent auctions, recycling of baottles and cans from our school, and an annual variety show, BGHS students have raised over $95,000 to date for this very worthwhile cause! 13. Welcome to Bishop Grandin! You will see these QR codes all around our school, and if you have a scanner on your smartphone, go ahead and find out some fantastic things you may not know about our amazing students and our incredible school!!! Most of these codes are posted where that actual subject/activity/room is...for instance, in jock hall, the qr is about our athletics program...at the Ghost town cafe, the info is about our culinary arts program, etc...!arugala

Art Club is run everyday after school, so if you are 'right-brained' (or not!!!!), come on out! For you serious artists, Portfolio Club might be for you...this is for any Art 30 student, who may be planning to go onto art school after graduation...we are open every lunch hour, and two days after school!!!peanuts
15. Building construction, welding and automechanics...ahhh, the trades! Did you know that some of our students will come out of Bishop Grandin with a first year apprenticeship under their belts?! From making our own car trailer, garden sheds that are fit to measure, to auto work (from oil changes, brakes, tire repair, and engine work), this is big-time! We get alot of our automobiles donated from GM, and also from people like you!seeds
