Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.


B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

1. What is a brand? Once you answer this question you will find your next clue near room 222. A brand is a mark or design placed on a product to distinguish it from other products and to identify the owner of the brand.
2. There are three tangible parts to a brand, what would they be? Go to the closest water fountain on the second floor for your next clue. Its name, its logo and its slogan.
3. True or False brand name can consist of words,numbers or letters that can be spoken. After you have answered this question it is time to head to the co-op display case to find your next QR Code. True
4. True or False a logo is a phrase or sentence that summarizes some essential aspect of the product or Ad. Head to the main office to find your next QR Code clue. Please ask Jeri Brown, Jenn Rea, Tara Vierling or Adriana Perna for the location of the clue. False
5. A trade character is a logo or brand mark that has been given human characteristics. Find two examples of trade characters and take a picture or copy their image. Once you find your two examples, head to the library circulation desk for your next clue. photos of trade characters will vary.
6. Identify one slogan and one jingle for a product, service or company of your choice. Head to the Student Council display case for your next clue. Answers will vary.
7. Identify the three intangible parts of a brand. Once you have done this head to the cafeteria to find your next clue. image, personality and ability to influence customers to buy.
8. Name one of your favourite brands. Is it a corporate brand or a product brand? Explain your answer. Then head to the SHSM display case in the great hall to find your next clue. corporate brand - represents the whole company e.g. Nike. Product brand is specific to the product e.g. Air Jordan.
9. There are three types of brands: Manufacturer brand,private brand and generic brand. Explain the difference between the three and find examples of products that represent each brand. Find your next question outside of the Phys. Ed. Office. answers will vary
10. Think about products that you buy. Do you buy manufacturer, private or generic products? Provide an example of a purchase you would make for each brand and explain why you purchase that product and type of brand. Head on up to the outside of the Math pod to look for your next clue. Answers will vary
11. Branding does three things for the customer: (1) identifies the product...Identify the two other things that branding does for the customer. Move to the Science office area to look for your next clue. (2) provides and assurance of quality and (3) provides an assurance of consistency.
12. Explain how branding can help you when you purchase a product or service? Look for the picture Mr. Dankevy with his guitar for your next clue. Answers will vary.
13. Why might a customer become loyal to a brand? Move to the Moderns Bulletin Board for the next QR code. Trusted quality, and consistency.
14. What do marketers use to create a unique brand identity? Look for your next clue outside of room 223. Promote a benefit of the product and the visual symbols of the product to help distinguish the product.
15. Product benefits are generally in three categories. Identify and explain each of these categories. Find the next QR code outside of room 225 on the bulletin board. Functional Benefits - meets physical and safety needs usually related to the features of a product such as design or location. Emotional Benefits - meet acceptance and esteem needs create positive feelings. Self-expressive benefits - meet the esteem and self-actualization benefits when use of the product expresses the consumer's self image.
16. One of the most powerful aspect of a brand is its visual symbol. What might the visual symbol include? Head back to the classroom to have your score calculated and for the next part of the challenge! brand name, logo and slogan or jingle.
